I had a Traeger portable...it sucked. Put it at 185 and it would go to 300. Apparently, Traegers are famous for that. Took it back to Costco for a full refund and bought a Rec Tec. Night and day difference.

Rec Tec is awesome. I have the portable. They don't make it anymore. Still, it was too heavy to put in trailer basement, so I got GMG and leave Rec Tec at home. It's way more sturdy, but heavy.

I started on uds and still use them occasionally. The drums do amazing ribs. I had an early(one of the first) traegars and had trouble in the winter. Many of my neighbors have newer ones and love them.
My go to at home is the big green egg but I don’t transport it. It is amazing and I can load it up at 4am, set the temp and then let it run all day
I have thought about a smoky joe for rev park but I am a little concerned about the smoke

I came back this afternoon hoping I had a few responses. Wow. I've never had so many answers to a post before. Everyone likes to cook, don't they.

Thanks everyone. There are some eye opening comments and I've learned of a couple of smokers I didn't know about before. A few stand out for me and I'll be checking them out further.

I have the trailblazer RT-340. Has foldable legs. I haven't brought it camping yet but a 1000 times better than the Traeger.

Yes, way better. I don't even know my model number. Service was awesome when I got it. They even gave me a new one when my paint peeled!!!

My legs fold, but it's just too heavy to get into and out of the truck or RV. I also bent it a little in a campground when I jacknifed and it was in truck bed. But it works, at home, and the GMG stays in the camper.

Just no need for any other grill/smoker. Only other thing you need is something to fry on, and something to deep fry on.

I've got a medium Big Green Egg. I absolutely love cooking with it. Burgers, steaks, ribs, wings, even pecan pie. For travel I just stow it in the basement without issue. I do also have a Weber Q220 (propane) for times there is a fire ban in place.

I've been using the little Brinkman charcoal smokers for more than 30 years. Last time I checked they cost around 45-50 dollars. I have a "killer" recipe for smoked turkey that our camping families always ask for around Thanksgiving. They last about 10-12 years before you have to buy a new one, unless you live somewhere that rust never happens.

They are easy to assemble and use, have two racks above the coals, and a water pan to keep the temperature down.

I always use wood chunks, not chips that fall through the charcoal grating. I always soak the wood in a combination of water and cheap red wine overnight before beginning to smoke.

Assemble the smoker, place the big pan at the bottom to catch embers, then the charcoal grill, then above that the water pan and one of the two food grates, then the top grate. Replenish the coals about every 2 hours, and add wood for smoke as you like. Make sure the water pan does not run dry. You can add water and charcoal into the smoker from the side door.

The unit can easily be dis-assembled and loaded into the truck bed of our tow vehicle without interfering with the Cardinal fifth-wheel being towed.

Send me a private message if you want a copy of my award-winning recipe for smoked turkey.

Upright? Barrel? Electric? Propane? Wood chip? Pellet? Charcoal? Any suggestions - or is it a bad idea?
Go to www.amazingribs.com and get all the info you could ever want.

Cheers

I bought a small charcoal barrel smoker. I clean it after every use and store it in a large tote. I use it at home and on the road.

Char-Griller with Firebox. It only goes with us on local trips as it LARGE (can do 20 lbs of featherbones at a time) and either takes up the entire fold down rack on back of TT or goes in bed of truck. Friend will bring his out to our sites if were having lots of people out. It hitches onto the back of his truck and he tow's it. We've done 40 lbs of featherbones, 4 briskets and 2 prime ribs at one time on his.

Have the Treager Tailgater with the folding legs which I love, small enough to cook for several people. Also recently bought a smaller version at Costco which is great for two people, can do 8 burgers or a couple of chicken halves. Do potatoes by rubbing olive oil and hitting with course salt wrapped in foil. Takes about an hour, set to 350 and walk away. Home Depot has a neat lid that snaps on to 5 gallon bucket that has a screw insert that is great for storing the pellets in a dry space and easy storage.

We have the Traeger PTG (BBQ20) grill and love it. Do note that you need 120V to operate.
