Breaking in the new GMG

Now that it is officially "after Christmas" I get to use my Christmas present, a GMG Crockett that has been sitting patiently in its box in the garage since before Thanksgiving.

MamaBear has decreed that she wants me to smoke a pork butt for our annual New Years Eve party down at our lake. After many consultations with my own personal "Meat Yoda", I think I'll have it all under control. I'm going down to the lake on Friday, and I will run the GMG a little to season it and get it ready. The butt's going in on Saturday morning.

Stay Tuned!

Tim

Make sure you update your firmware before you head down. Otherwise, you may have a very weird reading probe.

BTW, I have the same plan for New Years Eve, but we may throw a rack or 2 of ribs on there as well

Where do you get your Butts from? I'm thinking I'll swing by Kenricks after work tomorrow. I know they have good meat.

I get my Pork butts at the Schnucks on Loughbourough. I usually pick them up on sale for 1.19/ lb there. I bought two last time they were on sale and threw them in the freezer. Turbs smoked one of the ones I brought from there in Amana.

He also smoked a second one for DW and I that we took with us and it was amazing as well. (singlehandedly sold the wife on the smoker with that move. thanks again Turbs)

Reminds me I need to pull one out of the freezer.

For Ribs... I am still looking for a good place in STL to get mine. All I seem to find is Spare ribs or prepacked once frozen packages. I really want some baby back ones

You are going to love it!! Check and see if your firmware is the latest. I tried the prototype version, a few months ago. It did not work well and had to reload the latest proven version. If you try the prototype version, let us know if it is now working.

Not sure what firmware I have, but after just about a year, it's worked perfect each time! Once you get one that works, don't mess with it! I have 2 Pit Bosses and the GMG. I love the remote control and constant readings from the GMG!

Tim,
I can hardly believe that you are going to wait until the New Year to fire that bad boy up. You might need to have some pulled pork sandwiches for folks to nibble on while you are cooking that days meat. Just say'n...

I have a neighbor that cooks with me and we compare results between the GMG vs Rec Tec. This pic is prior to x-mas. We bought a big pork loin and put a half on each grill. The DW wants another.

Well... Its been sitting in my garage (in the box) since Thanksgiving, so what's a couple more days? I'm actually HUGELY busy today and tomorrow, but I am off on Friday. MamaBear has to work, so I'm gonna head down to the lake early. I might, just might throw a couple burgers on it after I get it all primed and running. We'll see...

Tim

7.84 pounds of delicious pork butt has been laid in. Definitely NOT on sale in the STL right now, but still cheaper than hamburger.

Got the Meat Yoda's rub all ready to go, did not get a chance to unbox the unit. Tonight for sure.

Stay tuned sports fans.

I feel your price pain.

DW wants to do surf and turf on the Davy Crockett for new years eve. I am now in internet search mode to learn how to do lobster tails in the smoker.

The cook times is what has me worried. I have read @375f it shoulld take 1.5 minutes per ounce of tail. I hope I don't wind up with a bunch of expensive rubbery tails.

Anybody tried cooking tails?
