campfire snack ideas (w/o marshmallows)
My son, 8, now has braces. so that rules out marshmallows and smores. My wife is having trouble finding ideas for snacks that can be cooked on a campfire that don't have marshmallows. Any ideas? He's not into the campfire pies...
thanks!

Jiffy Pop popcorn in the trays, but braces rule that out too.
Does he eat hotdogs?

Slice up a stick of pepperoni and push onto a marsh mellow fork or stick, roast over the fire until crispy. All the grease drains out, delish!!

What kind of snacks does he like?
Anything that can be cooked or baked inside can be adapted to the outside over a fire. Brownie mix in a mountain pie iron is delicious.

Fire pies...
Those sandwich makers you put in a fire. Bread and pie filling.

Why can't he have marshmallows?
I had braces for 4 years. The only limitation I had was no gum. Marshmallow comes right out if you brush your teeth.

They are yummy.
Also don't go into the campfire snacks with blinders on by only using hot dog forks and pie irons.
When my kids were small we made lots of thing over a campfire.
We would 'cook' Jello in an old coffee pot/tea kettle right on the fire.
Pour it into small plastic cups and put in the RV's freezer.
Iced Jello in about an hour.
We made all kind of things in tin foil pouches.
A small cast iron skillet or dutch oven can cook all the same things you'd make in the house.
It's all about the 'outdoor' experience.

Made my own Wolf 'Ems sticks out of doweling from Home Depot and tried it... worked great.

I think I got the original idea from this forum? Can't remember as I was lurking through too many websites....

Slice fresh fruit. Pineapple as an example and grill
Great flavor and good for you. Also banana boats.
Cut a banana down the middle and put chocolate chips and anything else on the center, wrap in foil and heat until chips melt

thanks for all the suggestions!
as for the braces vs marshmallows, it's not just braces, but the palatal expander and bottom retainer that has to stay in while he eats... no fun!

My husband put information out about the Woofem's sometime over the past year or two. He discovered them on Pintrest. I don't know if that is where you got the idea or not, but they are delicious!!! The only problem is, it sounds as if this boy does not like hand pies. You could do something similar to the Woofem's and instead of putting pudding or pie filling inside, you could roll them in cinnamon sugar, like a sugared donut.

Mix up bannock dough and wrap it around a clean stick or dowel. After it's cooked squirt nut butter, jam, honey or whatever else catches your fancy into the centre hole and enjoy.

Love to core - almost to the bottom but not cut through - an apple, such as Granny Smith or some other "baking" type apple. Place a small pat of butter in the hole & fill with pancake syrup. Wrap apple in heavy duty foil square & place in coals of campfire for about 15-20 mins, depending on size of apple. If apple pierces easily with a fork, it is done. Remove, open, and enjoy. But a word of caution - because of the syrup, which will almost caramalize, it will be really hot!!!

Banana Boat
Peel a banana almost all the way, but, leave the peeling where it can be pulled back up. Take a knife and cut a trench, similar to a hole in a canoe. Fill this space with small chocolate pieces. Pull the banana peeling back up and wrap in aluminum foil. Place this in the coals of the fire pit long enough to melt the chocolate.
