I am partial to the Old Fashioned… and some of my girlfriend’s closest friends in Maine set the bar impossibly high with their recipe.
They use Maker’s Mark or a variety of excellent sipping bourbons; Angostura bitters, and instead of simple syrup or sugar, use a maple syrup that’s been aged 3-4 years in oak casks used previously to age bourbon; they add a twist of orange peel, a dark cherry — but this is the real kicker: they use a small handheld butane torch to light a piece of maple wood, then put the glass over it so the smoke coats the glass slightly, then add the bourbon, bitters, maple syrup, orange peel and cherry over a large cube of very cold ice (-6° F).
Possibly the best Old Fashioned I’ve ever had…!
As a variation, they use a number of other bitters which complement the bourbon and orange.
