Do you make a food plan

My daughter thinks I am a little over the edge because I make a complete food plan for trips longer than a couple days.


I find this planning (spreadsheet)so much easier for shopping and packing to know what I plan to cook. It keeps me from bringing too much stuff that never gets used.


Just wondering if I am the only one

Of course you do! All us normal campers do, otherwise how would we know what to buy and pack? Does your daughter think food magically appears in the wilderness?

planning yes. A spreadsheet? maybe a bit overboard. as long as I don't run out of beer or firewood I can survive a few days with whatever is in the fridge or pantry.

We make a food plan in order to make a shopping and packing list. We use it cover the contingencies, but once we're on the road we rarely follow it. If we go out to eat or the weather doesn't cooperate we just change it on the fly. But if we get stuck, and it has happened, we have something good to eat instead of campground pizza.

I think when my kids camp on their own they just stop at the store on the way out and grab whatever looks good. Of course they have much busier lives than I do and don't really "cook" that much. They are happy with chicken and deli stuff. It is a much more expensive way to go. I actually enjoy the planning process and they enjoy it when they come with me and get actual meals

If you don’t have a spreadsheet, are you even camping? Without organizing and efficiency how is camping even possible?

Food plan? Yes, we plan to visit local restaurants whenever we're on the road. It's a vacation for the cook as well that way...

I keep some food in the trailer but generally find a store and get what I feel like at the time. Not all stores in less traveled area have a good vegetarian selection, so I tend to keep veggie burgers and dogs in the freezer!

sure we have a meal plan - i make a list of what we are having and that generates the packing/shopping list. Since my sister and i camp together, we divy up who brings which meals. It does feel real weird to go to the store and come out with only some eggs, bacon, and sandwich stuff for the whole weekend if she is bringing the dinner stuff. You look at the piddling little pile in the huge cart and think that that can not possibly feed everyone for the whole weekend.......and we gonna starve!! (we never do though LOL).

Yeah, we bring some stuff. And then we go get some stuff. And we also go out and eat. We argue over WHERE to go eat, of course. But we find somewhere. Then we plan to have X tomorrow, and when tomorrow comes we don't feel like X.

It appears we must thrive on chaos.


But we're fat, so..................something is working.

We camp with 3 other families and we generally make mealtime together a major part of the experience. Each party brings their specialty to share with the rest and we just make sure there are no duplications. We're talking smoked ribs, brisket and pulled pork from a smoker. We're talking corn on the cob. We're talking custom pizzas made with fresh dough, a slew of toppings and cooked in a propane-fired pizza oven. We're talking roasting veggies on the grill. Everyone contributes food and sometimes there are surprises (like a theater-style popcorn machine). We eat ( and drink) better when we camp than we do at home!

Hi rangerjean,
I have lived with a woman for 20 years that is very organized about grocery lists and food prep. Before an RV trip like this week, we have a brief discussion and she makes up a list. Sometimes I buy groceries, sometimes we go together. We don't eat out much and waste almost zero food. She is a great cook and I do the clean up. Once in a while I have to insist on cooking.

Sorry......when we began camping the DW made plans as to meals, bought groceries ...................... and at the end of the week we brought 2/3 of them home.............. plans always change.

The youngest son got smart he lives a couple of hours from the campground................. he brings a cooler with him and takes a load home with him at the end of the week.

Oh whats a spread sheet ???

That has been every trip we've ever taken. Wife plans every single breakfast, lunch, dinner, whether it's traveling or down at cabin. We always end up dragging 90% of it back home. The exception is the cabin now. Can goods stay there and we have two frig's to store food in that have a long shelf life.

Funny. I was thinking the same thing. Man was eating long before "spreadsheets' came about. We just swing by the store on the way out and pick some things up. It's not rocket science.

And, in Alaska, food does sometimes just appear! Dolly Varden, Grayling, Rainbows, Lake Trout, Salmon, Pike, Burbot, etc., for example. And, it ain't magic neither!

The only "Spread Sheet" food I eat, is one of the slices of cheese you unwrap and you "Spread" it on a piece of bread....like a "Sheet."

Several years ago I introduced my Granddaughters to fresh-caught pan fried trout with scrambled eggs & fried potatoes while camping. It has now become a yearly right-of-passage when camping to catch their own and make breakfast. Yes, there is hope for some teens today!
