Assistant scoutmaster here as well, 20+ years. Anything you can cook in the oven at home, you can cook in the Dutch oven. You can even use the lid inverted as a great skillet!

I have even taught the boys how to use a mess kit as a small Dutch oven to make meals. Hint on this, use it upside down, with the larger side on top as the lid to keep ash from getting into the food. Our troop often has cooking competitions! Of course, I am an easily bribed judge for "official taste testing"! Fun to see the boys come up with interesting combinations.

Dutch ovens can often be found on the cheap at yard sales. Just be sure to season them as needed!
