Favorite Dutch Oven recipes

Well friends the season is underway for some and for some of us newbies I was hoping to start a DO recipe thread. For me, my new 12" deep DO will be on my doorstep in two days and I want to practice a few things before getting somewhere where failure means not eating, ha ha. I've seen a few different threads on here that discuss everything from meatloaf to cobbler but for you experienced DO chefs, what's your favorite main course and dessert that you can put together with some cast iron and coals? Cheers and happy camping!

I just bought a 10" Dutch oven last week and haven't had a chance to use it yet but am anxious to get started. It will be a new experience for me. Just a few days ago was a thread about Dutch ovens and there was at least one good recipe.Check this out and it might still be active.

I am thinking of doing a peach cobbler as my first attempt.

Nothing better than a big pot of beans cooking in a Dutch oven hanging by a chain from a tripod over a bed of coals. Cornbread cooking in a 10" Dutch oven, makes me want to hit the rv park

One thing for sure anything you can cook in the oven, you can cook In a Dutch oven. We do homemade biscuits in our 10" for breakfast almost everyday.

This is the easiest dessert to start with and it is great.

wife's favorite main course: stove top stuffing in the middle of the oven, surrounded by baby red potatoes, top with cornish game hens cut in half, finish by setting sweet corn halves in between the hens. little salt and pepper on top. cook 90 minutes 350

my favorite main dish is the sour cream green chili enchiladas

Son's favorite dessert is apple dumplings from the boy scout website, super easy.

baking some chili or beans with the corn bread on top in the same dutch oven is yummy.

Once on a float trip we had stopped for the afternoon and baked the rueben casserole and a carrot cake. I brought along some cream cheese frosting. we were just having cake and coffee when another group came paddling up. We offered some cake and coffee, they thought we were kidding. they were soaking wet from the white water and couldn't believe we had baked a fresh cake. they were on their 8th day of freeze dried food. there wasn't a crumb left after they were done

noobie dutch oven stuff

Dutch oven liners made of bakers parchment paper are a wonderful thing.

Lodge Camp Dutch Oven Liners - Package of 8 at REI.com

Makes cleaning up a snap. The oils (grease?) of your food seeps through the paper just a bit, thus I have never had to season my oven. Just rinse it off and wipe it out with a paper towel. Walmart has them cheaper in a different brand. Or make your own, it's just parchment paper.

Here's a peach cobbler any noobie can do first time out:

Byron's Dutch Oven Recipes - Easy Peach Cobbler

That page has a lot of good recipes for a family sized group. Also I take all dry ingredients for the above recipe and put them in a plastic jar with the recipe taped to the outside. Makes a pre-measured cobbler kit. No spilled flour or sugar from open bags in the trailer.

We like these skillet/dutch oven recipes that are just like the ones served at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Mo. We make these in a 12" dutch oven or cast iron skillet.

Heat iron skillet, coated with oil, then add the following (use quantities to fill the pan):

For the Harvest Skillet- Add green and yellow string beans, sliced carrots and roasted red-skin potatoes. Add chopped pieces of ham or chicken. Season with salt and black pepper.

Skillet Sausage Medley- Add roasted red-skin potatoes, red and green pepper, onion, sweet corn and smoked sausage. Season with salt and black pepper.

Calico Potatoes- Add sliced sweet potatoes, sliced white potatoes, sliced onion and chopped green pepper. Season with garlic salt and black pepper.

I've been cooking in Dutch ovens for 15 years now! I'll be back with favorite recipes when I have more time.
