Finally A Cook I Am Proud Of

well this whole camping thing is still rather new to me. so i have been kind of lacking in my campsite cooking. well i decided that i had to do better. so seeing a post by a friend of mine on another forum about lasagna rolls i decided to do my own. well i made some fresh pasta. fried up some ground beef. and put it in the dutch oven.

here they are all rolled up

i used two jars of sauce and two bags of cheese one bag went into the rolls and one bag on top

baked 350 indirect on my small egg for an hour

and the plate shot

i thought it was very good. especially since i have never made these before in my life. everyone said it was the best thing i have cooked onsite yet. i wonder what will be expected next time

yummy

This is something that you could make with leftovers as well - pasta is easy (flour, eggs) and whateverr meat/cheese/veggies are around. I really like this idea. I'm going to give it a try this weekend. I'm guessing you used a pasta machine to get those nice thin strips? I'm loading a hand crank one into the camper tomorrow. GREAT IDEA. I'm thinking the children will love helping to make these!

Did they stick to the bottom of the Dutch oven? Did you pour extra sauce there first or oil it at all?

my pasta machine hooks on the front of my kitchen aid.

i had a hand crank modle before i had kids. and it was no fun but with kids you can talk them into the cranking. but for me it used to wear me out. we got the pasta machine as a free gift for buyig the kitchen aid. ever since then i have been working on fresh pasta. this time i added some bbq rub to the pasta. if you look closley at the first photo you can see some of the rub in the pasta.

i added some sauce into the bottom of the dutch oven. it did get a little crispy around the edges so dont over cook it

I have a KitchenAid mixer.....wish I had the pasta attachment!! What kind of bbq rub did you use?? I use a product called Homemade Gourmet for the majority of my home cooking and I can see that it's going to lend itself to camp cooking very well!!

our next trip is planned for september since it gets so hot. but we have a group of big green eggers that like to get together. so if you find yourself near south carolina in september let me know

tmu1967

i use a rub i buy out of virgina called Dizzy Pig i used their tsunami spin in the pasta. i usually buy their stuff in bulk cause it is easier. let me know if you need more info. other than them the only commercial rub i buy if john henry's hot wing rub. i buy it because my son loves wings with just the rub on it. that works very well on the campsite. the other rubs i get from a friend in florida that likes to send me diffrent stuff. but that is what happens when you participate on a bbq forum

kitchen aid

I hadn't thought of bringing the kitchen aid along - hmmm.

We made bread last weekend and used the pilot light feature in the oven so it could rise. I could be using that dough hook instead....

I like the idea of adding a bit of rub to pasta dough. My trick is dehyrated powdered vegetables. For example drying spinach is really easy and putting the bone dry result in the blender gives you a powder that can be added quite easiy to pasta dough (and keeps forever). If you have a food dehydrator making other veggies is easy (I puree the steamed veggies then dehydrate the result) and you can make really colorful pasta very quickly. My children love the colors.

i did not bring the ka along. i made it and froze them in sheets at home. then i took them out of the freezer in the trailer.

i like the dehydrated veggies idea. i seen a spinach pasta that looked easy. but i have yet to try it. give the bbq rub a try if you get some time
