We have cooked Thanksgiving Dinner many times but never had turkey. We always roasted Cornish Game Hens in the little oven and they were terrific! We brined them and seasoned them before roasting. Whipped up some homemade mashed potatoes, dressing, yams and a small green-bean casserole. Everything was scaled down for two people with few leftovers (not enough room in the fridge). Everything worked just fine.

For the past few years, a group of 5-6 families have camped at Thanksgiving. The first year, my mom cooked the turkey at home and brought it to us on Thanksgiving day. Since then, Mom's developed Alzheimer's and doesn't travel as much.
I borrowed a large electric roaster pan from our church, purchased a "cheap" (not Butterball) turkey and it was the very best turkey we have ever eaten.
I cleaned and washed the turkey, dried the cavity, put a peeled onion, a clove or two of garlic, a few stalks of celery, and a stick of real butter. I mixed up some thyme, rosemary, sage, coarse salt and fresh ground pepper with some olive oil. I pulled back the skin, especially around the breast and legs and rubbed this mixture in well.
I placed the turkey in the roaster BREAST SIDE DOWN for about an hour and a half, then carefully turned it and let it roast for another 2 1/2 hours. It is so tender that it will fall apart when you remove it from the roasting pan, if you are not careful.
It browns well and looks pretty, but tastes even better.

Yummmmm and easy
Turkey in a box! Take 3 costco pans. Punch holes on one, fill about 2/3’s charcoal. Slice 2-3 onions and celery into another. Prep turkey (no stuffing for speed), place over onions. Add can of chicken broth, place on coals, add 2 more cans of broth. Place roasting pan lid on top. Add smoking chips to taste if desired.
Here is the cover. Take an apple box, line inside and wrap up 1/2 outside with tin foil. Tape seams with metal/foil duct tape. Cut slot in the top about size of a quarter.
Place box over all 3 pans, place empty cans under lip of box to allow some airflow. Wait about 1 hour, remove box to remove top inner roasting pan if turkey is brown enough. Replace box. About every hour, check progress, add water if needed. Replace box.
In the meantime, preepare your other fixn’s. Dutch ovens if ya gottem! We did this again this past weekend at camp. 3 turkeys, stuffing, cranberries, mashed potatoes, pumpkin, peach and blueberry pies....and more....for 55 hungries!
Takes 3-4 hours. Probably the most moist, tasty bird you will eat.
My Boy Scouts are always in awe that you can eat like we do when camping.

I would not know that I have never ever been in prison or jail . But I have eaten over peoples houses and wished I was eating a meal back in school or the hospital for it was so much better

The last thing I want to do is spend hours cooking when camping and then all the cleanup, you people have way to much time on your hands when camping I only eat so I can camp not camp so I can eat , I save that for when I get home

By the way, use the onions and whatever drippings left in the bottom of the foil pan, use for the best gravy....
The smell of the turkey when cooking in the campground in the box....really brings in the people. I charge them a beverage to come see....LOL! (Well, except at Scout camp.....)
Nice thing about the box turkey, do it at home, great conversation starter, frees up your oven for the other goodies. Other than the foil pan the turkey is in, everything can be reused. Well....except the turkey and charcoal....lol.

That's very cool, thanks for sharing!!
My go to method to cook anything is a Weber kettle grill or Weber Smokey Mountain. Smoked turkeys are great, brining the night before will make for a super juicy bird.

My favorite turkey is from the smoker. have not taken it camping (yet) but this should be a social time! spend the day with friends and family. a smoker only needs to be checked every 30 minutes or so. enough time for a walk, chat with the neighbors, spash in the water, what have you. you can use either a gas or electric smoker. if you get one of the fancy digital ones, you dont even have to check on it, it does all the work for you. and let us know the results!

Step one. Close on cabin on Friday
Step two. Wait for farmer to harvest soy beans.
Step three. set up blind in field.
Step four. Wait in blind for turkey to arrive.
Step five. Wait some more.
Step six. Use bow to take turkey...if and when he decides to show up.
Step seven. Gut, clean, rub down with an assortment of seasonings.
Step eight. Drop in hot fryer.
Step nine. EAT !

how you doing turkey for thanksgiving in the RV
We have never camped over Thanksgiving -YET. But one day we will. I’ve long planned I’d do the turkey (probably just a breast for the 2 of us) in a Dutch oven. But that Trash Can method has my attention, as does the 3-pan method!
We regularly do Cornish hens with cornbread dressing in the Dutch oven when camping. Gonna have to add corn on the cob to the pot now.
Y’all are making me hungry and stirring up my thoughts for prep methods for sure!

Remember to make the box for the 3 pan method. You will be totally amazed how moist and tender it will be without having to brine or inject.
We do this here. Saves the mess in the oven, and frees it up for the other goodies. Minimal tending to, about 1x an hour or so, maybe every 15-30 mins as it nears done to check the internal pop out thermometer, or if the legs are about to splay open and fall off by themselves. Sometimes, those internal pop outs do not pop.

I'm intrigued. My only question is the proximity of the hot coals to the cooking pan, with only a layer of heavy foil in between the heat and the food. Do the aromatics and liquid take most of the direct heat and protect the bird?
I might give this a shot, I bet it would work on other meats besides turkey. Best of all the cleanup requires little more than a dumpster, I'm all good with that!
