Coffee

Fresh and strong is the best so I always take green beans and my roaster along. I roast 1/4 lb at a time and grind as needed. I always take my french press, pour over single cup drip brewer and peculator. All give you varied and unique tastes so I make coffee usually on my pour over unless I have a taste for a different taste. I use to drink a lot of coffee but mostly 2 cups now days at the most.

Had a friend who used to roast her own beans. Coffee was excellent but the smell during roasting was exactly like cutting plywood with a dull blade.

Some of the absoluute best coffee I have ever had was in the field. 3 lbs of cheap coffee, gently poured into 60 qt pot of boiling water. Shut off the burner and let it sit for 25 or so minutes then gently pour a gallon of cold or cool water around the pot. Let dit another 20 or so minutes. Carefully scoop out canteen cup of hot coffee. Sometimes it would put hair on your chest. Sometimes it would take it off.

Your right about the odor as I never roast indoors but while it may have a slight odor you describe I think it also has a heavy odor of slightly burning peanuts mixed with other non-pleasant odors.

Out of curiosity, how do you roast yours and where do you buy your beans.

I bought my roaster at sweetmarias years ago and buy beans from them once in a while. They review all of their coffees and include characteristics of each bean. Also ebay and green coffee club come to mind. Many places out there and you can start roasting in an old air popcorn popper or cast iron pot to keep costs down. Lots of info on sweetmarias and youtube.
