I've had moonshine like that, but my favorite is from Joseph, OR of all places. Stein Distillery, Steinshine. Don't know how you get it outside of Oregon.

If I can’t get the real stuff I opt for Junior Johnson. I make the men in the family moonshine cherries for Christmas every year.

I am a big fan of damson moonshine. I live close to Franklin County. So, getting good moonshine is not a problem. What I don’t like is that a lot of people mix Everclear grain alcohol with fruit and call it shine. There is a big difference.

I have yet to figure out why people purchase moonshine for big bucks when
moonshine, aged for 4 or more years in charred oak barrels comes out golden amber colored, has a great smell, taste and is smooth and usually costs less and comes in fancy bottles.

I understand that often you go back to what you were brought up with. I drank PBR in college and for years after, but now I like a nice pale ale or a craft IPA.

So what is the attraction to moonshine?

Moonshine done well is smooth and has a good taste. Different than whiskey or bourbon because of the lack of aging. I don't go for high alcohol or fruit flavors, I just like a clear well done corn whiskey now and again like any of the others aged whiskeys, too.

My favorite comes from a great-uncle's still that is still up in the mountains about 3 miles from his house. He's in his 90s, but his is still some of the best. I've had the stuff at Old Smokey's and it's passable, but nothing like the REAL thing.

Using any moonshine you can get, get a fresh, ripe pineapple and remove the core and the outside peel. Cut into long thin pieces, collecting the resulting juice and put some juice and 5-6 slices of pineapple in the moonshine and let it "age" for a couple of weeks. It is yummy!

I agree that the shine that you buy in the store isn’t true shine. As to why, it is more that you are not supposed to have it more than anything else. When I was younger I drank shine because it was easier to get. I like it still, but a nice glass of Woodford Reserve or Single Barrel Jim, Bean sure is nice.

DW bought some Margarita Moon shine in Deadwood, SD this past summer. Only a little bit made it back to Alabama. Her preference is Raspberry.

Only shine I ever experienced was at the party of a navy guy from Georgia. Smelled like smoked nail polish remover and tasted like I imagine that would taste. I’m sure there are better examples out there that would be nice to try.

Grandma's homemade apple pie a la mode for us. Just now thinking about whipping up a batch. My buddy makes real moonshine so we thought we'd try some of that to make the apple pie.

I was given some apple pie moonshine a couple years ago and forgot about it. Would it still be any good?

Our Ozark camping friends make Apple Pie Moonshine that should have a warning label printed on each jar. It's so good you wouldn't think it could pack such a wallop.
