New Dutch Oven

Picked up this new dutch oven from Sportsman Warehouse, on sale $49.99. It's a 6 quart 12" & came with a storage/carry case. It's manufactured by Camp Chef but has the Sportsman Warehouse logo. I seasoned it with coconut oil. 4 rounds on the grill. The quality is very good, no weird spots & very uniform. Here are some before pics.

After Seasoning

Here are a few after seasoning pics. I think I'll do 2 more rounds today. The D.O. also has a thermometer notch. We do some very long cooks 5 & 6 hrs somtimes. Our D.O. is one of our most used tools & can't beat the taste. 95% of our cooking is done outside with the Camp Chef Yukon hooked directly up to the camper via the propane quick connect.

Nice. We carry a dutch oven and a cast iron skillet in our camper; most of the cooking is done outdoors.

I would be surprised it that new DO wasn't already pre-seasoned at the factory. Most of the quality ovens now come pre-seasoned. Doesn't hurt to do it again. Treat them right. They'll last forever.

It was pre-seasoned. I washed with hot water & stiff brush just to sanitize & get rid of factory crud. Then continued on with seasoning.

all mine came pre seasoned but I treated as you did. love these things. I take two DO and two CI skillets every trip. I also own a square kinds of grill skillet...never used it. I don't do much beef grilling so not sure why I would use that instead of skillet. ou did a really nice job

We carry a couple of ovens too and cast iron skillets. Beats the hell out of the RV oven.

All of my cast iron is over 120 years old. I LOVE cast iron. I go truely old school to season my iron. I put a couple of pounds of lard in the pans and make some old fry cakes (doughnuts.) I cook some and let the oil cool and repeat the process 4 or 5 times. It does a great job seasoning the pans.

I had a whole set of cast iron dutch ovens and fry pans...

They were fun at first, but after awhile it was just 150 pounds of unused stuff in the trailer.

When I sold my house last year I couldn't even give them all away...so they all went in the dumpster!

I carry an 8 inch and 12 inch frying pans. I have a lid that fits the 12 that also fits my largest deep stainless pan. That is all I need. Why would you carry 150 pounds of cast iron cookware?

Lodge. ONLY one made in America. Only way to go. For us, anyway. We also have one smaller one than the 10" and are looking for the 6", which I believe Lodge discontinued. But always looking in second-hand stores, yard sales, etc. And, of course, we have the Lodge frying pans in 4 sizes.

That is a good size and the traditional bread oven. I like a 12 inch deep for cooking meat and most main dishes. It amazing how many people seem to collect cast iron but never use it.

Commence to cookin vittles is our mantra. I have cooked for up to 50 people at a time with cast iron. It is fun and very forgiving. A Dutch can cook anything.

I got my first DO from my great uncle in WY 35 years ago. It is a 10 in Lodge made in 1937. It sank in a canoe on the bottom of the John Day River, and I dragged across the bottom of the river on a line and rescued it.
