Rusty Cast Iron Pot
I have a large cast iron pot (small washpot?) that my wife has used for a flower pot and it has sat out in the weather for years. The outside has been painted and the inside is really rusted. I would like to clean it up and maybe use it for a stew pot or large soup pot. I've read a lot on cleaning and seasoning rusted cast iron but I'm not quite sure how to go about cleaning one this large (probably 12-14 inches tall, 14-16 inches across). I don't think DW would approve of the oven cleaning method, so I thought about maybe trying the gas grill method, if it will fit with the lid closed. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

As a last resort, maybe. Tried the grill... too big, the lid won't close. May have to go the campfire route to burn it off, then season it. Man, that sucker will hold a BUNCH of stew or soup! When I get it cleaned and seasoned, ya'll are invited. Now, I just need to learn to make cornbread in my new 12" deep Camp Oven. Or maybe I need to get a 10" for the bread. What say ye, JollyMon?

take it in and bead blast it
then start over seasoning it
this way you anre sure to get rid of all teh possible contaminants

I second the bead blasting to get all the toxic stuff off of it. Then get a brush and paint it with olive oil or canola oil and shove it in the oven when sweet wife isn't home. Having it beaded will remove most of the stinky stuff.

Sounds good... bead blasting it will be. However, as far as sneaking it into the oven when DW isn't home... she's like CSI. She knows when I get within breathing distance of HER stove. I'll work out something that'll be a little safer where she's concerned. Thanks for the help.

I agree with all the well said advice. Blast it, season it, use it.
Not sure about the cornbread...I'm probably the only Midwesterner that doesn't like it.

What size exhaust ports does she have J? When I do the mods to the crockpot, I should have a set of headers for sale. They'd be sweet for chili and you know the neighbours will appreciate them.

Finally took a pic of my pot today. Had a serious case of CRS lately, and I just thought about it this afternoon. Hope I can get it to post. The wheel in the background is a stock Chevy 16" wheel, shown just for reference to size.

That looks like something your great-great-great grandmother would have made home-made soap in!
Does it have legs? Can't tell from the pictures.
You could make a heck of a lot of chili in that.

Yes, it has legs. It's been painted on the outside and used as a flowerpot
for years, but for the last 2 or 3 years it's just sat under a pine tree
holding water. So far I haven't found a crack or any
trace of damage, other than just being neglected.
When I get it cleaned up I'll post another pic, if I
can get one to come out slightly smaller.

As a back-up plan, use the pot the first time to make a big o' batch of chili. Call any red flecks in the chili either paprika or red chillies!
