Weber Jumbo Joe, 18" diameter. Weber is still the number 1 bbq out there, charcoal or gas.

frankie D,
I have been using an old cast iron Hibachi grill since the late 1970's. It always works well, is easy on the charcoal, is easy to clean with a wire brush and scraper, and stores well in an old cardboard box with the charcoal lighter, the wire brush and a 5# bag of charcoal. Any of the stamped metal table top grills will disintegrate in just a few years of use. Last summer, I saw some stamped metal ones at Walmart for under $20, but they are probably disposable after a few uses.
Good Camping! Jim

I am still using a 14" round Weber knockoff I bought at Tractor Supply 5 years ago for $12. I clean it after use and try not to let it sit outside in the rain for long periods. Good for 5 - 1/3# burgers at a time and does not use a large amount of charcoal. If someone "borrows" it or I forget it at camp, I might find it hard to replace for the same price.
I store the grate inside and secure the cover down with a bungee through the handle, holding the lid in place.
I then store it in an old pillow case inside the truck.

Weber also makes a Smokey Joe. It's the little brother to Jumbo Joe. Has a 14" Diameter cooking surface and runs about $25-$30. Both Webers are great. We have Jumbo at home and Smokey for camp. Whether Smokey is big enough for 3-4 just depends on how much you're grilling for those 3-4. If you like big old T-bones for 4, jumbo would work best. If half to three quarter pound steaks are your norm, smokey would probably be fine.

Best... as you see from the replies... best means something different to everyone.
You'll get opinions on best but who calls the final shot?
I use a $20 charcoal grill from Wally World and am perfectly happy. It grills nicely. With my $15 cast iron griddle that fits inside, it makes wonderful breakfasts and with my A-Maze-N pellet tube, it is a great smoker. All for less than $50.
I also have a propane version of the grill that gives the same results.

I have the Weber Go Anywhere and will cook 6 burgers and 4 hot dogs easily. Uses about 4lbs charcoal per meal.

I like the chargriller barrel style BBQ with cast iron grates. Works great for us. Goes for about $60 at most home improvement stores or Walmart. I had the smoke Joe, but it never seemed to get enough air follow to get hot.

This is what we've used. There's not enough grilling space to feed 4 NFL linemen, but for the two of us it's plenty. The features we like best are the lighting procedure, being able to close it and store it while it's still hot, and it takes up relatively little storage space.

Since the topic is Table Top Charcoal Grills I'd like to offer a major caution. Some grilles are really nasty in what they can do to a table top, wood or plastic.
Every season I see at least one wood or plastic table top with a charred or melted area. Either make sure the grille is supported high enough off the table top to keep this from happening or take a piece of fireproof material like is sold for in front of fireplaces or under stoves.
