We never know when that might happen !!!

The way the old Manual awnings were made only thing you had to add was maybe a couple of deflappers !!! You did not have to put them away every time a little dark cloud passed by !!!

WOW! with all the replies I see that we all camp different. My awning are always strapped down for just those times when unexpected winds or whatever might happen. When I am away from my rv for any amount of time I retract the awning (power) within 30 seconds, and put back out upon my return. Awning straps are very easy to release. I do understand that not everyone has this option, that is why I state different ways of camping for different people. That's why it is so enjoyable to camp and meet people with different ideas.

The reason for the poles is to stop the compression of strong unexpected down drafts and the straps to hold the awning for unexpected uplifting. The combination makes for a much stronger structure for the awning. The poles allow for the awning to be tilted to its max or anywhere in-between for rain run off. The poles are not designed so that a person can ignore weather but do provide a certain amount of protection for the unexpected.

This is my first electric awning and I'm already on my second motor, it was replaced last year mid season. Acts like it might, maybe, last the rest of this season. I retract it every time I leave the site for up to 6 weeks a year. They don't last.

The next time I buy a new trailer I will order it just to get a manual awning.
Other than that I'm happy with they come.

My previous fifth wheel had an awning that came down at almost a 45 degree angle. I could get away with just straps on that awning because the straps were virtually inline with the awning and I could lock the arms. On my Georgetown, the awning is 11' in the air and almost straight out! Even with pulling the awning all the way down, it's still taller than I can reach.
