Something happened to us in Florida this past Jan. We weren't at the RV when a storm blew through. Poles saved the awning!

We had a storm 2 years ago 65+ mph winds from nowhere, my wife could not figure out how to undo the ratchet straps, she got them and then she was holding one side of the awning and a gust lifted her up off the ground, she had not got to the other side yet, so she rebooked it back up San went to take shelter because the tornado sirens started going off.

If you look closely, you will see a loose fit on the pads that are pop riveted on your poles. The loose fit lets the water out if any gets in.

I bet you do, even if it hasn't rained.

Drill a hole in them if you're worried they'll rust/corrode.
