My awning arm knobs are never tightened. I just set the poles to the height I want with the left side of the awning at least 6"-8" lower than the right one and just ratchet strap them down tight. The material is taut and the awning sheds water very nicely.

I was just going to point out that without the poles, the knobs are how you disable the auto-dump feature.

But you're right... With the poles, the knobs never need to be touched.

Call Dometic and ask for an adjustable strut. They gave them away for free several years ago.

I have the same awning setup. Use the palm of your hand right at the joint pictured and slap it down to get the angle you desire. Use light force until you understand how much effort it takes.

Hope this helps.
