OC's Awning Mod Kit Pole Mod
So I am futzing with OC's awning pole tie-down kit this weekend. Need some supplies first though...
Harbor Freight has a sale (YAY!  ) I spend a bundle (Boo!  )
Good News: Harbor Freight has a 4 pack of ratchet tie-downs for $10 (more that 1/2 the cost of a cheap-O at Wally World!) Screw-in stakes $2 apiece for the win!
Back home in the garage I am trying to make the UGLY go away from these darn poles (sure wish I had been in on the poles OC had custom made!)
Poles have a blue handle and a blue screw at the end. Blinding flash of the obvious, cut em off!
Screw end, no problem. Done. Handle...I start to and then notice HEY there is "pole" under the handle! So I cut off the handle, brainstorm some more and get some copper end caps for both ends.

Rather than epoxy the caps on, just use 1 or 2 pop rivets.

The Handle End was 1" and the Screw End 3/4"
OC Nailed it with the Pop Rivet idea for security! You will still need to goop it up because the end caps do not fit snugly.

Bingo!
And now my mod continues before the next outing on June 19th. But, I'm not happy with the cam inside the poles. I think I'll drill the inner and outer to accommodate different lengths and use a pin, like the OC used to for the retainers at the bottom.

I believe that is what I would do. I'd just set the awning level, mark the inner poles and then drill holes every 2" up and down the mark about 8" in both directions.

Yep, that was pretty much my thoughts. That should cover most heights we encounter.

Yeah OC you nailed it again!
I dissembled the painter's poles last night in preparation to prime and paint and the locking mechanism is....really cheap plastic. I can see these failing easily -- and in a high wind, that could be catastrophic!

Thanks oc. And thank the other party for me, but dw and I are seldom in one spot long enough to tie the awning down. I did appreciate the simplicity in design but you know us halfton drivers. Trying to keep the weight down. Lol.

Unless your only camping one night at a time...they are worth the setup and it doesn't take much more time than waiting for front electric jacks to retract & extend on a fifth wheel

Anyone use aluminum conduit for support poles? 3/4" for upper 1" for lower .
