I would make sure the poles can't drop. I just feel better to center the poles and drill thru them and install the pin thru the brackets and poles.
Looks good, you did a nice job.

Didn't see his instructions..........used the same poles, drilled more holes, but mounted mine with the bigger end of pole up.....didn't need a sprinkler. Also mounted with the pole adjusting catch to the outside so would have some clearance.

Don't have any idea what a sprinkler would have to do with the poles and no idea what the adjusting catch is either or how anything can be moved outside for clearance.

Without the pole hand sponge stuff on the big end, it's open....slight chance, but if I get water (rain or washing) in the pole, what will happen when one extends the pole? Mine aren't a twist to lock deal, they have a positive catch to be depressed to extend/retract. I also found furniture leg (chair stuff) anti-floor marking rubber ends that with some vinyl gutter glue fit perfect.... the base of the anti-markers is just large enough to keep post against the quick pin creating a no rattle thing......but, if they did rattle, couldn't hear anyway over the truck! Ops, just gave away my top secret stuff.

Bob - Just bought the same poles today at Home Depot. I'll use your trick of closing the lower clamp together a little and capture the pole that way. My fear is drilling the fiberglass pole could lead to splitting/fracture. The catch seems very positive and robust so I'm not worried about the lower section dropping inadvertently.

I didn't close the lower travel/stow bracket.....the foot I used created my anti-rattle devise and just step your drill bit sizes....no problem with fiberglass chipping/splitting....I added a series of holes to the alum. part of the poles for more adjustments. Fiberglass up/ alum down.......the chair leg stuff came from Lowes and also creates a foot so the pole doesn't sink into ground.....small block under pole would do same thing. The alum end being a hex, it was also necessary to sort of glue these on.

OC, I got to thinking about what you said about the poles dropping. So I went to Ace Hardware and got some 1-1/4" i.d. vinyl tube. I'm going to cut it about 2 " long then slice it so it will slip over the fiberglass but first I'll mark the poles then tape it, and spray it with locktight adhesive and put two SS worm drive clamps per pole. I didn't like the idea of drilling the fiberglass handles, their pretty thin.

Using Wooster poles from Home Depot. I like the click lock mechanism. When I played with the twist to lock I found I could make it slip if I polled down on it. I modified the Wooster poles to make it a little shorter. These are the 6 to 12 foot ones. I am adding more holes to it right now so it can have more lock points. Will be painting mine too.

I made a set of poles using grey PVC electrical conduit. They worked fine but when OC made a limited run of metal poles earlier this year, I picked up a set and swapped out the PVC poles. He did a much better job of drilling holes than I did and they look a lot better.

I chose to use the gray pvc electrical conduit, ....1" into 1 1/4" ,.....I like the look of the gray post, a lifetime color with no need for paint or polish,......used them for the first time this week......really like what they add to the use of the awning,....they are just a little heavier than the aluminum or fiberglass poles would be, but nothing to be a problem, .....they have the feel of a very substantial package, not flimsy at all, and I like that......I drilled my holes 6" apart
we just got home from the campground, will add some photos later

BTW, I still have 10 kits left to sell and that will be the end of them until late fall or early spring next year.

Go back to #1411. A bit on the spendy side, but lightweight and pretty much "pre fab'd". Shoot a few more holes and a paint job... That'll get'r'done. If I remember correctly I think I paid around $30 piece and added feet to mine.
If you go back a ways in this thread OC's got diagrams of his PVC poles that will cost a fraction of what I spent. Very concise and you could knock them out in an hour or so.

I would be interested in photos so I can see what you guys are talking about, thinking of getting a set of brackets but would like to see how they are mounted and what they look like extended.

If you look back through this thread there are quite a number of photos. They're worth their weight gold. I would probably get your order in fairly quickly though. From OC's recent post I think he only has 10 sets or so left. Those are going to go pretty quick.

picked Poles up from Mike618 (thanks again) and checked out his Factory (Old Coot) install.
Can't wait to install our set as soon as return from my next two trips.
