Depends on what you consider big winds. Have had ours deployed in 25 mph quite a few times.

With-in reason with the wind.....most people, if not all, have had very good results when using these....the longer doggie screw in stakes will work better in soft ground.

I'm confident that the poles would have held the awning in place up to 30 mph. This storm was large and was expected to get worse before it was over. So I opted to shut her down. Like Turbs said, common sense.

When my awning is deployed, I worry more about the dust devils and no way can you react fast enough.......poles took that problem away. And, me being 170lbs and not caring for heights, don't want to become a para-sailor.

Ed....saw your post on here tonight....I'm the one that was parked behind you at Branson rally in the 5th wheel from Arkansas that had the awning hold down poles and brackets....mine had the painter extension poles that I had made while Mike and Mary from Belleville IL(mike618) parked down near the pavilion at the rally had the poles that were made by Old Coot. I wanted to let you know after we got home, I ordered netting from Amazon that we had talked about and as you can see in the attached pic, I can use the same anchoring point with bungie cords for both the netting and the tie down strap attached to the awning....it's all working out great....as you can also see in the pic I'm only using tent stakes holding mine in the ground at my present campsite but that's because I'm in rock and I can't get the doggie screws in the ground...I will not chance it with as much wind with the tent stakes as one can with the screw-in style of anchoring.....good to see you on the forum.....Lloyd.

Lloyd you may be interested in The Claw, I learned about it when someone mentioned it some pages ago here and I replaced my cork screw hold-downs with it. I had the screw loosen during a heavy rain one night, it caused no damage, but I discovered it the next day. Plus, had several times when the screw was difficult to get in the hard, rocky ground, but not with The Claw, it works great

Is the Claw hard to pull up and what is the "easy" way?

I learned about it from another person's post, but don't remember posting anything about it myself. I carry a claw hammer, it drives the spikes in and the claw on the hammer pulls the spikes up just like removing large nails. They are driven in at an angle for holding purposes but that doesn't create a problem for removing them. At first I hesitated about spending $50 just for two hold downs, when I already had the screw type, but now I'm glad I did and IMO they are a much more dependable system than the screw.

How far out from poles do they require? Concerned about fur buddies getting tangled up.

Don't know of any special instructions for distance away from the post. I just use them in the same way I did the screws. I place them wherever I think is best. I like that they are low profile and a yellow color. I had marked my screws with orange duck tape for visibility because the screws do stick up and can be a trip hazard.

If you have a sun screen the trip hazard is all but eliminated.

Don't think the Claw would work in the FL sand, but in other situations, it should be great. Be nice to be able to switch the nails for the screws and have a real universal anchor. I may just give it a whirl.

Hmmm..Led lights or sunscreen.....might need more conduit.
