truck camper question?

This is more of a question because of not knowing, can you remove a truck camper at the CG and still use camper while not on truck so you can use truck to drive around and explore?

Was wondering along the lines of is the camper able to be used without the truck supporting it, is there some sort of leg system attached to camper to be able to lower it and pull truck away ?

back in the 60's -early 70's we did it all the time.Just let the jacks down all the way to help with the "wiggle". And dont do it with a 3 jack system, but I havent seen one of those for quite a while.

Most have jacks on the four corners. Perfectly fine to off load it.. then lower it to ground level and use your rig to get around in. It's more common than keeping your camper in the bed of your truck.

I've always wondered the same. Thanks for asking!

We've had 2 TC's, a 3 leg & a 4 leg. We took the 4 leg off at campgrounds, lowered it & camped that way. It certainly does feel weird though, especially when getting into the bed up front. Except for the wiggle it was fine.

Though we never did it with the old 3 legger, I think it would probably be safe. One leg is on the front & one on the rear on the same side & the other side it's on the center of gravity mark. I used to store this one on barrels & planks & worked up in the bed area for some major overhauling.

I would say that there's so much percentage of the weight in the main body that it's not in danger of tipping.

We loved our TC's & they do have a lot of advantages.

Not every campground will let you do that. The one I stay at in AZ won't allow it. They don't want to assume any liability in the event the legs don't support it and it tips over. Made sense to me..

From what Ive encountered, some private owned campgrounds / RV parks may not allow it, but I've never seen it disallowed on USFS campgrounds or State Parks.

When we had our truck camper always took it off the truck at CG. Lowered jack all the way down.

We do it, on almost every trip. Never had a problem it does wobble a little but nothing that can't deal with.
