AC will not keep running on generator

Hi. We are brand new Georgetown XL 352 owners. We are trying to get the AC to run on the generator. It AC starts but turns off after approximately 30-60 seconds. Thanks for any advice. Debbie

Are you just running 1 a/c unit and nothing else? Fridge set to gas? TV off?

Your rig should have a 5500W Onan generator which will easily power the A/C unit. The generator is connected to an automatic transfer switch then to the electrical distribution panel. Since your AC runs fine on shore power but starts then quits on the generator I'd strongly suspect a problem with the transfer switch.

I'd get an AC voltmeter and check the voltage on both legs of the power feed to the circuit breaker box. You should read 120V from each "hot" wire to neutral and if you see a significant change when the AC shuts off (ie one leg goes to 0V) the problem lies between the generator and the distribution panel, leaving the transfer switch and the wire connections to it as the culprit.

I have the diesel generator. I have to let it run for about 5 minutes before the air conditioner is turned on. I also put the fan on so it has a load or else it does exactly what you are saying if I go right to air conditioner. It cuts out.

I just got back from 7 days boonbocking in 100 + degree weather AC on small generator. No problem with this setup. AC also starts much easier on shore power.

Are you still having a problem. I had a similar problem with my AC running for a while on generator power and than shutting off after 15 to 20 minutes. I have an AC ceiling vent in bedroom just above thermostat which was blowing on thermostat. I closed off the ceiling vent and now runs fine.

Thanks for the info but we did get the problem fixed. It was a bad board in the generator. It was Under warranty so just cost us the inconvenience and getting hot while driving.
Oh but we did get a rock to windshield while driving home from Cummins.
