Air Conditioning

Good evening fellow RVer's, I have a 2005 Rockwood Ultralite 31 ft, I cannot get my air conditioner going. Everytime I turn it on it trips the breaker before the compressor kicks on. I would appreciate any tips or guidance to fix my problem!

Tooltime!

Welcome to the forum its a great place to get your questions answered When you say it trips the breaker are talking about the AC breaker in the rig or the breaker at the pedestal/house where you have it plugged in.

Yes, it trips the breaker at the electrical panel inside the trailer!

Check capacitor inside the AC, check current draw at compressor. Your compressor might be going out

Any idea how I do that?

P.S. Thanks to all for your help, I don't have an air conditioning manual. I think it is a Dometic Air Conditioner

you will need a clamp meter to check for current draw on the compressor. As for the capacitor, sometimes they just go by themselves.
Google model number of your AC, and find the capacitor online or rv place. Should cost around 10-15$

If you are not used to using electrical tool to check current draw and circuits I advise you contact a mobile RV tech or take the rig to a HVAC dealer and ask them to to a check on your compressor. No mater what you do let the forum know what the outcome was. good luck

P.S. my guess it is either a capacitor gone or the compressor has shorted.

I'll echo what Seadog said, If you're not comfortable working around electrical devices, you may be better off getting someone experienced to look at it. That capacitor can bite you pretty hard if not handled correctly.

I also agree that it's probably the capacitor and maybe the compressor.

If you set the thermostat for just fan, does the breaker trip?

If you feel confident in doing it, you can replace the capacitor to see if that helps. They're pretty cheap. You just need to match the numbers off the old unit.
