Cell phone interferes with MaxxAir remote

Tonight our MaxxAir fan wouldn't respond to its infrared remote control. Replaced the remote batteries. No good. Used my cell phone camera to verify the remote was putting out an infrared signal. It was. Thought the IR receiver on the fan had gone bad. Then I noticed my wife's cell phone face up on the bed below the fan. The screen was off but could it still be outputting an IR signal of some sort? Flipped the phone over. Fan remote worked again. Checked the face of her phone with my camera and, sure enough, it's outputting a tiny IR signal even when the screen is off - just enough to "blind" our fan to its remote.

So, the next time your MaxxAir fan, or some other device, isn't responding to its remote control check and see if there's a cell phone screen pointed at it. That might be your problem.

Go figure.

Possibly the IR used for face recognition on the phone?

It's the"long range" sensor to turn on the screen. Mucked with my IR repeater system in my house, too.
