Compartment locks

One of our basement storage locks broke. I want to buy several in order to be prepared, but am not sure how they are measured. I measured ours and from end to end they are 1 5/8" long. I didn't see anything that long, so how do I measure correctly?
Also, once the nut is removed do I just tap the old one out? It is very stubborn and I don't want to break anything.

Here are some videos on how to measure and install new CH751 (or replacement) locks.
