Generator for Rockwood HW 256

Hi Folks,
New to RVng, actually going to pick up my 2006 HW 256 later this week. Wondering what would be the best generator for this unit? I really like the honda's in particular the 2000 series but will that run the AC on this unit? I believe I read somewhere that most AC's require at least a 3000 watt generator. I have very little knowledge on popups and rv's, hoping to pick up an owners manual somewhere as this is not going to have one.

Appreciate any advice,
Thanks

it would help knowing what size a/c yours has and the brand/model number.

also, where do you plan to camp, at sea level or the mountains?

most people are unable to get a Honda 2000 to run a 13.5k a/c. i'm one of the lucky ones that can but i usually camp at or near sea level.

you don't need a 3000w one to run yours. a Yamaha 2400 should run it easily and only weighs around 70lbs.

I'm located in East TN and will be anywhere from 1000 to 3000ft probably. Yeah, not sure on the ac model number...hoping someone might know more based off the fact that it is a popup HW 256.

Thanks for the repy

My Yamaha EF2400is runs my 13.5k BTU AC, and I have camped at 3500'. There was a poster here that ran his AC at 7000' with the Yamaha. I can't think a High Wall would have a bigger AC, but you need to check that to be sure. If it is a 15k BTU AC, then you will probably need a bigger generator than the EF2400is model.

As a precaution, I make sure all other electrical loads are off the generator before starting the AC, plus I run the AC fan up to speed to lessen the load, also.

Great idea. I figure whatever I get if the AC is running that will be it, no microwave and very few lights.

So far the best price I have found on the yamaha 2400 is $1331 shipped at wisesales.com , they also have the 3000 handi for around 1979 shipped. The units are almost identical in size and fuel tank with the exception that the handi can produce 600 more watts....just not sure that is worth 650 bucks?

I've been all over the forest river site and can't find any tech info on the HW 256 only dimensions.

I got mine from wisesales.com a couple of years ago....that was the best price I could find at the time, and it was delivered to my door with no hassle......just had to take care of the credit card bill at the end of the month.

You know what, just called and that yamaha 2400 is on some promotion now for $1219, that is probably a pretty good price. I asked how long the promotion will last and of course subject to end at any time, lol.

I paid $1089 3 years ago (7/08) with free shipping, so the price hasn't gone up too awful much in that time. Plus, there is new model designation (EF2400isHC)....not exactly sure what the difference is.

True...that is exactly the one I'm looking at. 3 years is a pretty good time...guessing you are happy with yours? How do you secure at night? Do you chain it to a tree or your rv? I'm sure thieves wouldn't hesitate to lift one of these units.

I did manage to find that the new 2011 HW 256 does have a 13.5k ac so I'm pretty sure a 2006 would have the same.

Appreciate all your info on this matter.

I keep my Yama chained to a tie down in the bed of my truck. I have a roll up toneau cover to keep it hidden, and try not to advertise the presence too much other than run time.

During travel, I keep the generator at the front of the bed for weight distributing. When camping, I move it back to the right back corner, and just run it in place there......the exhaust is pointing out of the bed in that position.
