generator maintenance ?

We are new owners of a 2010 ForestRiver Sandstorm. I have a question for the group. We have a Onan 4ky 4000 wt. generator, we wont be taking it out for a few month and the owners manual says to run it for 2 hours once a month. Is this what you all are doing or can I shorten the time without hurting the generator? Thanks Debbie

I try to pay attention to how long the generator goes between uses and if I go 30 days without running it - I will exercise it for 1/2 - 1 hour.

Don't forget to get it serviced after the first 20 hours of use - typically just an oil change and a check-up.

Two hours seems excessive to me, I have always exercised mine for 30 minutes or so once a month and under load. Turn on the air conditioning, run the fridge on AC, etc. If your motorhome sits for long periods then use Stabil on fill up before you park it. Run the generator for 30 minutes to be sure the Stabil gets into the carbs. I have found that our generator starts much easier and runs better by doing this. It's also good for the motorhome engine as well. In the past before I used Stabil (on our last rig) the generator was always a real bear to start (also an Onan 4kw). With our Georgetown I started using Stabil on the last fill up after outings and when I parked the rig for storage. Generator runs great and no problems for going on 2 years now.

NWJeeper,
Good idea on the Stabil - will have to look into that. Our rig hasn't sat idle for more than 30 days since we've bought it. We've taken it out at least once per month, but we don't always run the generator.

Where do you buy the stabil from? Wal-mart or automotive store? Do you just add it to the gas tank?
Thanks Debbie

Walmart has Stabil as do auto parts stores. It comes red containers in differing sizes, just follow the instructions on how much to use. As many RVrs don't run their generators all that often, getting some Stabil treated gas into the carbs on them makes a big difference

Thanks a lot. My 1st trip out will be next Thursday to North Carolina. I am nervous about doing everything right. I will probably use the generator to cool the rig in the heat. I am also working on stocking my tool box so stabil is on my list.

Deb, Stabil helps keep the gas from gumming up in your carburetors. The sooner you can start getting Stabil treated gas into the generator the better off you are going to be. The worst thing for engines is to sit around and not get used. Gas can go bad after just a couple of weeks sitting and plays havoc on fuel injectors and carbs when it does.

Another thing I use is Marvel Mystery Oil with my engine oil changes. Again follow the directions on the bottle if you do. I have a friend who is an aircraft mechanic and he swears by it in his airplanes and vehicles. It can be added to the gasoline but he recommends not using on vehicles with catalytic converters so only for aircraft, motorcycles, boat motors, etc. I now use it on all my vehicles when I change oil as well as my generator. Again just be sure to only use the measurements indicated on the bottle.
