GPS for RV Travel

Hello all
I have a question about GPS units for use while towing my 5th Wheel. There are several out there but would like some input into which may be the one people recommend. I am most interested in one that will find campgrounds for me on the road and list low clearances and such. Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated. I used this forum to get input on a TPMS and based on the input I purchased a TST 507 unit. It works great and didn't break the bank.

Truth be told, we own a Garmin RV edition.. whatever model it is. It has sat in our center console since we launched fulltime almost 10 months ago. My wife uses Google Maps and Allstays Camp & RV on her phone for almost everything (campground finding and routing/navigating). For low clearances, we rely on roadside signs and *knock on wood*, we haven't yet had an issue.

I use a Garmin RV 760, so far it works great. I use a truckers atlas to find low bridges and overpasses. I use a GoodSam campground book to find my campgrounds. I also look on the web for state parks, I look local for campgrounds. A good apps to get is RV Parks and campgrounds and its free. I go on google maps of where I want to go the next day and look anyway, but the Garmin RV760 has so far been great, a little big and also a little pricey. But the features it has are great

I blame my Garmin Nuvi for sending us up "Old Priest's Road" going into Yosemite, but it was the dumb TV driver (me) for following it and not seeing the warning sign. No excuse for not following signs & common sense. We bought a Rand McNally RV GPS soon thereafter. It has all the appropriate warnings when in "RV" mode, but I hope I'll pay more attention in the past. So far we haven't found any perfect GPS's. We also use the other resources gpendydad cites above. By the way, the "Old priest" was an altar boy when he started up that sucker!

I used the Garmin 760RV on my trip to FL and really like it. The thing that I was most impressed with, was the traffic data and the rerouting that it did to avoid traffic issues. I haven't used it for much more than guidance, as DW looks up stops on her phone.

I use the Garmin 560. It's a truckers GPS but it works well for my truck and FW. Low underpass,cross winds,you have it all. You can also install all the (poi's)points of interests you want. Camping's, state parks, fuel stops,just about anything you think of can be found on the net to add to your POI's. If you can afford it get the 760, it has the same features but the screen is bigger.

We had the Magellan RV which was OK, but quit working while on a trip last year so stopped at Camping World an bought the Good Sam RV GPS by Rand McNalley. Much better and mounts better in my truck. They both let you switch from RV/Trucker mode to Car mode.

We have this but we haven't used it yet. We have been using Onstar directions (but the free trial just expired) and google maps.

Used CoPilot for a 9k mile trip this past summer. Worked great.

As already stated they have come out with a RV version. They have sales all the time, I'll probably buy it when it goes on sale.

Oh, it's an app for phone or tablet.

We use the Rand McNally 7715 unit. Love it. Bought lifetime upgrades so I update it twice a year. It's got a screen big enough that even I can read it. Has lots of RV specific parameters to set if you can select "car" mode if you don't have your RV. Has lots of features I don't use all the time but I'm selective , depending on where we travel. If it's all new terrain, I turn on " Steep grade" and " sharp curve " warnings, otherwise they are off. It also has an add-on plug in to monitor traffic but I wave to bothered with it.

We didn't get far before I said, "No way, no how...if there's a turn-around..." and there it was!! 1st gear all the way down. Tranny >285 deg!! Helps one's prayer life!!! But not his married life!!

I've had Garmins, Magellans, Smartphone apps, GM (and Harley) built-in "Navinfotainment systems.
By far, I prefer Garmin. With Garmin, not only can I load many web-available custom POI files, but I can write my own using Garmin-provided software.
If you can set up and fill-in a spreadsheet you can make your own POIs, complete with proximity notifications, custom icons, and custom sounds. You can even write your own "tours". Of all the systems I've owned, only Garmin allows this.

GPS are great but they are only as good as the person who programmed them.. A podcast I listen too on Geocaching does a report of GPS mishaps. It blows my mind how far people will go and still NOT realize something is wrong.. People has: driven into the sea, off cliffs, into the desert... Onto piers. It is hilarious but kinda sad!

We use a Rand McNally RVND 7720 RV GPS and has worked great. At the time (Oct 2013) Amazon had lowest price. Updates are free and ours has undergone several significant upgrades at no added cost. Very easy to use.
