I used 1/4" (I believe) bolts with lock nuts and washers.

No idea how they will hold up, but you can get rivets. Here is a link to some aluminum ones. $15 for 100 (think lifetime supply). Insert and pound away to peen the head.

Solid Aluminum Rivets - 1/4 to 3/8 | Solid Aluminum

Site has rivets in other metals, but stainless is probably harder to work with.

I used the bolt method on ours until we got to Goshen then Cedar Creek was nice and replaced them with the 4 step model

I was thinking a small hex bolt with lock washer and washers? I dought I would find a new large rivot let alone the tool to do the rivet. Pics bellow for reference.

One of mine completely broke off while my son-in-law, holding my grandson, causing him and the step to hit the ground. Luckily no one was hurt. Easy fix is like others have said, drill out the old parts and place a grade 8 bolt, washer and self locking bolt. Go ahead and to this with all of the same points on the steps as all are in the same process of failing.
