Here's one for you................
Went camping friday air conditioner worked fine,strong thunderstorm went north of us friday night,but didnt hit us. AC went out early sat morning about 3 am.fan works as does everything else but ac wont come on.It tries to but sounds like the compressor wont kick in,AND it trips the breaker in the camper.Came home today and plugged it in at house and when you turn on the fan it works, but switch to air conditioner it trips the breaker in the house, every time.

Sounds like the compressor may be seized up. A/C units are very picky about propper voltage as well as free air flow. Any A/C unit should only be run with all of its outlets open whether ducted or not and have a clean intake filter. If the A/C cannot flow freely the compressor will heat up and seize. If it isn't a seized compressor then have the starting capacitor checked as they can and do go bad although it is rare. We had the starting capacitor go out on our home A/C unit and the symtom you discribe was close to the same.

I have taken the cover off the ac and the compressor is not kicking in, I guess it is the compressor(tall black tank looking thing w/ the copper hoses coming in/out of it)it just shudders when the thermostat clicks. 75% of the time the ac breaker trips.Everything looks clean also. I so hate to call the "Man" to come fix it.

Check the capacitor, it may have gone bad. It is used when starting the compressor.

If you are lucky the starting capacitor is bad. Not too expensive and it's a DIY project. Also...quit trying to start the compressor...if the capacitor is bad this will only damage the compressor.

If it is a Dometic a/c unit, they are known to fail under a voltage drop and as stated above it just might be the capacitor. We had one fail at work and took out the control board as well and it damage the entire electrical system. To repair it was not worth it, it was more economical to replace it. The cost to replace the unit was $750.00 that's for a 13,500 BTU unit. My I suggest that if it comes to replacement have a Carrier installed and up grade to a 15,000 BTU, the cost is minimal. The next suggestion is, if you have the extra money have a Heat pump installed, this will give you a second source of heat with out using propane.

It sounds like a start capacitor failure. Here's a link on how to test the capacitor to be sure.

FYI, I just replaced the start capacitor in one of our Dometic low profile units that are on our parking booths. The first pic shows a good capacitor, the dark one is the start capacitor for the compressor. If you look at the next two pic you will see what has happen to the capacitor. We had a power bump and we end up having to repair or replace the unit depending on damage. This one was lucky, we had spare parts from another unit.

I am going to put the new capacitor in tomorrow. The guy at the rv place said my first one had a bad connection on the inside,first one he ever saw like that.Hope it works. I also have been wondering if it could have something to do with the power converter

Ac update
[B]Put the new capacitor in and it does the same thing, compressor wont kick in,breaker trips.I cant believe I will have to get a new ac on a 2005 surveyor.We also have a 1986 Gulfstream Conquest rv and that ac will run your ***** out and it is 20 years old!!!!!!!!!!Just goes to show they dont make em like they used to

One other think you can try, remove the cover to the unit place a piece of 2x4 on the side of the compressor and then strike the 2x4 a few times with a hammer, some times this will free up the valve and if it does then the compressor should start, but this will not fix the problem.

 Had to take the TT to "THE MAN" He popped for $880.39 for new ac.
I feel so violated.
