Battery Locks?

I just purchased a Rockwood 2104S and was wondering how I can add a lock to my deep cycle batteries. Looks like most TT's have the batteries sitting on the unobstructed support beams, however the Rockwood has an expanded metal grate welded to the frame that the batteries sit on/in. Any ideas on how to secure my batteries so they can't be easily stolen?

Thanks

How do you secure your 12 volt battery?

I have a new TT that has a tray that sits behind my gas tanks for my 12 battery. The tray is made of steel expanded metal with narrow openings. My question is how do you secure your batteries to protect them from being taken when you're away from the trailer?

mine sits at home when not in use. Seriously though, if I were parked someplace where it would be unattended for extended periods of time, I'd probably just move them into the trailer. Possibly stick a baking sheet or something under them in the unlikely event that they leaked.

Sounds like you may be leaving it in storage or something similar. You're going to want to keep them disconnected and charged between uses anyway, so you may want to just take them with you and keep them on a charger while you've got it in storage or unattended.

My TT sits in outside (fenced) storage when not being used and i pull the battery and keep it in my basement.

I used to worry about it the first couple of years I was in the storage lot, always pulling the battery every time I dropped it off and bringing it home. But between the number of times I ended up at the storage lot without the battery and had to go back home to fetch it, and the fact that when I replaced the dealer battery with a good flooded cell it was like twice the weight of the old battery, I ended up just leaving it in there for the next couple of seasons. I'd bring it home when it got parked for the winter, but during the camping season I was out there probably once a week anyways.

If you really wanted to make sure it stayed, you could probably wrap a chain around it somewhere (We'd have to see a picture of your tongue if you want suggestions on specifically where) but I find that big visible locks tend to just be a bulletin board to thieves that "Hey look! There's something expensive here!"

If you can fit it, another option is to replace your battery box with a locking one. I was looking at these boxes a couple of years ago because I liked the concept of the built in solar trickle charger, but at the time they didn't make one that fit my battery box rails. It looks like they've got single battery units available now though:

I haven't done that since the TT sits in my drive. But I do secure my PI EMS with a Master 5/16 cable lock. The thought has crossed my mind to pick up an extra as they are not real expensive and can be snugged up real nicely to use just where you're thinking. Then again you'll never thwart a determined thief. You can slow them down and make it obvious to others though. Good luck

Steel bike cable around frame and box through handle. If they want bad enough to bring bolt cutters, let them have it. My way just scares off the opportunist

When camping, I don't worry about it. When the trailer is in storage, I remove the battery. I do it mainly for maintenance, though. I like to baby my batteries, keeping them in a climate controlled garage with a trickle charge. Batteries are expensive and a consumable ... I like to maximize their lives all I can.

If you’re really concerned it will get stolen, just take it home. That’s the cheapest solution. Put some kind of reminder flag on the trailer’s key ring to remind you to take the battery with you to the storage lot.

I had to build a 2 battery mount on my Rockwood Ultra V for my Trojan T105s. I just secure them with a couple of old belts (I've lost 50 lbs in the past couple of years) and then with bungee cords. Each battery is so very heavy I've stopped worrying about them being stolen. I think Paul Bunyan is dead. No worries.

One of the reasons I am installing lithiums is I am relocating mine to inside the trailer.

My previous plan was to install an aluminum locking tool box on the the tongue but the added weight to the tongue along with the weight going with dual 6V GC batteries made me rethink that.

I always remove my current battery.

I got my camper a Torklift PowerArmor box that keeps the batteries charged while in storage.

I do not worry about my batteries getting stolen but have a concern the factory battery boxes are not secure. My concern goes back to the days of owning a pop-up rental business using exclusively Rockwood pop ups. The boxes were secured with two steel screws which quickly became oxidized and useless. I had one battery bounce off the unit. Since then I remove the screws and use four stainless steel rivets to hold the box and add a nylon strap. I have not had a problem since.

What he said! Work great for me and with a quality lock, other campers will look like easy pickings.
