Smile I'm sure we all have had days when we wonder how GARMIN came up with a route.

I'm sure we all have had days when we wonder how GARMIN came up with a route, well I've finally figured out a way to help GARMIN along. Your GARMIN GPS must have ECO route for this to work. Always make sure you have the latest maps and updates.

Here's how to make Garmin keep you on major interstates:

reset the ECOroute vehicle profile ... put the city mileage to 5 mpg and highway to 90 mpg and unleaded fuel.

changing routing to 'less fuel' or 'ECOroute'

change avoidances only selected are: 'unpaved roads' and 'car pool lanes'

reboot your Garmin

give it a try and let me know if it helped you ... sure making traveling routes MUCH better for me.

They do it without ever going outside to look, let alone actually driving around! They might even base their routes on Google Maps for all I know.

Son-in-law reckons his smart phone is a much better GPS than his Garmin. I might buy his Garmin as our cell phone is a PHONE that we use only for voice communication, not a miniature computer with an unreadable screen.

When I tell my garmin to take me downtown from home it always
takes me via expressway/interstate.
Tell it to take me home from downtown it always routes me surface
streets- can you say 40 stoplights!!

Recently was using garmin and google maps to get home from Holland Mich.
When we got close to Indy, garmin wanted me to go straight thru town!
Google at least had me take the bypass......

Other times the garmin has been very handy- especially when we're
trying to find an address/business/restaurant in unfamiliar territory.

I always want a map as a back up but occasionally that's not possible.

Recently spent 3 nights in Mammoth Cave NP campground.
Each evening tour buses would circle around and around the campground.
Their GPS was telling them there was an exit out the rear of the CG.
Not so and hasn't been one there for at least 20 years!
Camp host said it happens all the time- every time they get a new bus
driver!
I checked my garmin and it at least had the no back exit correct.

Vicksburg, MS gives my Garmin fits. It routes you thru non-existent roads that end in someone's driveway, that don't go thru a hill or levee.....but the unit thinks they do.

Does Garmin actually make their own maps or use a third-party like many of the others do? I thought they used Navteq.

If I intentionally miss an exit because I know the area better than my Garmin it will "recalculate" and want me to make a U-turn................in the middle of the Interstate!!!! gotta love that!
