Hot Spot
When all else fails or I need a secure line I use the hot spot capabilities of my Samsung S3 on my Verizon plan. Just part of the cost of this life style. IMHO.

Hey TURBs;
Usage is charged to my data plan. Do you know something I don't?

I think he means that with some phones and some plans, you get charged extra for the hotspot feature on your phone. For instance, I paid $45/month for 2 seasons because it wasn't included in my plan.

Corect.
Data usage is used but no additional fees.
Dont ever give up that phone as the s3 and s4 will not turn the hotspot on unless you pay an additional fee and still get charged for data.

Internet when traveling
Turbs, I think it also may depend on the carrier and your data plan. With AT&T and my iPhone - my old plan, it was a separate add-on. With my new "shared" plan, the hotspot feature is included.

I'm grandfathered in with Verizon unlimited data. FoxFi hotspot app and all is well (as long as I got signal) thankfully, I only check in on work stuff, and not every trip, so I try and leave the blankety blank phone off !

We use the Galaxy III S for our hot spot with Verizon and have been very happy with the speed. I also use it in hotel rooms, I travel a lot for work, and some want to charge up to $12.95 per day for WiFi in your room.
When we tried to use the free WiFi at RV parks we found that later in the day when many people got on it slowed the speed so much that many times it was unuseable.
Good Luck

For us one of the great things with camping is finding out you lose cell coverage half way to your site... Phones get shut off, no email and no net.. No one misses it one bit while we are gone...

Wifi
We have been using the Verizon Hot Spot and most of the time it is adequate. You have to watch your usage however, because the first 4k goes really fast. We have streamed movies over it but that really eats up data time.

I've used both an iPad 4g as a hotspot and a separate MiFi 4g hotspot device, both on Verizon, both worked well.
One thing to mention -- if you pop an iPad on something like a MiFi hotspot and you have your iPad configured to backup to iCloud when connected to a LAN connection, you will likely use up all of your monthly bandwidth in a few hours if it runs a backup, so you'll want to think about turning off iCloud backup if connecting with a mobile broadband hotspot.

That completely explains some incredibly high data usage for us! Man, thank you!
