Is the step UP or DOWN?

For those of us who don't have automatic electric steps, or only have a mechanical step, the most common question in the RV community has got to be: "Is the step still out?"

Wouldn't it be nice to have a indicator light on the dash that warns when the step is extended?

I installed a proximity switch and indicator light on my dash to show if the step is still extended. This was a inexpensive mod that takes a little bit of electrical skill.

The only issue that comes to my mind (such as it is) is; if there was an issue with the light circuit itself there would be a false indication of the steps being stowed. If the light illuminates to show the steps are stowed and it wasn't illuminated that would be a positive indication something is wrong (steps not stowed/lighting circuit etc.). just a thought. Good idea though.

Bubbles;

I wired mine so the sensor gets power ONLY when the engine ignition switch is turned on. If the light is ON, its serving as a warning that the step is NOT retracted.

By mounting the sensor on the back of the step, when the step is retracted, the step itself protects the sensor from crap being kicked up by the front tire.

I understand thoroughly what you did. I just pointed out that if that light is out and there is an issue with its circuit (open wire/light burned out/ etc.) you could drive off with the steps extended and therefore it does not provide a positive indication of step condition. That's all. I'm done.

Bubbles, Yes, you are correct. If the circuit fails, it could be giving a false indication.

Now what, you need to add a backup to check your backup...

Great idea and thanks for sharing...
