We are sitting here tonight in Myrtle Beach and the wind has picked up a bit. Even though I have the awning secured with straps, it is shaking the trailer some so I decided to roll it up. Except that it won't roll up.

Looks like the lever on the end has decided to break, making the awning impossible to roll up. There is an on-site RV service so I guess I'll have to call them in the morning.

I was at Lakewood for 10 days in July, close to the beach and the wind was an issue.

Kept rolling up and down the awning each day, so I can relate to your problem.

Hopefully the night will be calm and you'll get that fixed quick.

Thanks. The problem is the night isn't calm but has gotten windier. Hopefully it won't rip the awning out.

Better tie it down tight Kim.

I had borrowed my dad's rig many years ago and the awning wouldn't roll up. I had to remove it from the side of the rig, put it inside and bring it home that way. What a pain.

Kim, sorry to hear about the bad luck. We were in MB in July and we had a problem with our slde out, it would not open all the way I called for on site service and out of the three no one was available they were all back up with service calls so we camped with the slide out 2/3 open.
When we go to MB we do not open the awning because it is so windy and my camper has it's 3rd awning on it.

Hopefully now that the busy season is over they an get out here by tomorrow anyway. If not, I guess I'll have to pull it off and take it home that way.

Thanks to a fellow camper and brute force we got the thing rolled back up. We will leave it up now until we get home.

Kim,
Not saying this is what happened to you, but I have seen where folks have wound out their awnings too far. Too far being maybe an inch further then they normally would. This is enough to load up the clockspring to the point of putting heavy load on the pawl for the lever to move. I have done this myself a few times on multiple awnings. The only way to fix it for me is to take both hands and grab the drum and unweight that lever mechinism by rotating the drum a little further in the outward direction. This has worked everytime for me.

Think of it like the times someone has turned the wheel in their car to the point it locked the steering lock in the ignition and they go to start their car again the next time and the key won't turn the ignition until the steering wheel is unloaded.

My advice to anyone who will listen, when you pull out your awning the rain flap should hang off the bottom of the drum. If the flap starts rolling around to the front side of the drum too far it will eventually bind up.

Hopefully this helps someone out there.

That is sort of how we got it rolled back up. I don't think it was out too far but it may have been. Anyway, it is up for now. I'll take it to my local repair shop so they can give it a look and fix anything necessary.

Damn good home brew too! It may or may not be broken, but it is up now, and will stay that way until we get it home Saturday.
