Question measuring your trailer

My wife an I just came back from a camping trip, We made reservations on line, they asked the length of our trailer, We have tt22rkss We put down it was a 22 foot trailer. When we got to the camp ground we almost did not get in because the ranger said our unit measured 28 foot, I asked him how did he measure that, He says the standard way of measurement is from the ball hitch to the rear bumper or spare tire which ever is longest, Just want some input

"standard way of measurement" LOL! We have found that there is none. Just know how long your trailer actually is and that the campground may not accurately measure their spots. Google maps satellite view helps when making reservations. We have a rear slide and I include that in the total length when looking for a spot, if I see trees or other obstacles on the pictures.

The number in the model designation is usually the interior length. Example: our model # is 34REQS but the actual exterior length is 37'6" from hitch pin to rear bumper.

I don't think FR counts expanded length if you have a hybrid/popup or in our case a rear slide. I believe they measure it for model # length inside closed up for travel.

Typical way to measure the length of the trailer is ball at hitch to back bumper.... Model numbers rarely mean ANYTHING. It depends on the manufacturer but usually do not mean total length..... Ours is a rare example 356QLB our total length is just under 36 feet..........

I agree - no rhyme or reason to model designations or length quotes. I don't believe the number is the interior length either. My Mini Lite 2503S has a 22'-0" interior length and 26'-9" from ball to bumper.

Agree, the number would be quite different for a hybrid, popup or unit w/rear slide.

Some model numbers represent the usable/liveable square footage of the camper.

I don't think they do it anymore but at one time the model number had the length of the trailer in it. At least for some manufacturers.

For example I had a 2008 Wildwood 32BHDS. I was told that it stood for 32' trailer with a bunkhouse and dual slides. Looking up the specs shows the length as 35', but I believe that is including the hitch and bumper.

For licensing and taxes it is the length on the VIN. For campgrounds and storage it is hitch to spare.

I have a trailer advertised as 28', the VIN shows 26', the model is 264L which seems to indicate 26', the outside box dimensions are 28'4" and it is 31'9" hitch to bumper and 32'6" to end of spare.

So, what size is my trailer? It depends on who you ask!

Just searching the web for your model number and in six dealers there are six different lengths for the same model. The message here, measure ball to bumper and use that number. Don't worry about spare, that can always be removed if it becomes an issue.

Soooo, my 8282ws would be. ???. Lol. Some use length. Some, like open range, use square feet of floor space, and some have no connection to size at all.
To op, the only way to know is to measure, but remember, when a campground asked for length, they need to make sure it fits in the camp site, so give total length, maybe add a few feet so you aren't cramped .

While I think your answer to the title is correct, what I think the OP is really asking is what do campgrounds go by. IME that depends on which campground you ask.
