No heat or airconditioning?

Heating and cooling were completely dead today. It was 49 deg F and a little heat would have been nice. Used a 1500 watt electrical heater powered by inverted battery power for about an hour 'till I figured things out.

Although I have a home battery powered digital thermostat in my camper that doesn't need the red 7.5 volts to the thermostat, I did check it with a voltmeter and found that their was no power in this wire. I found a 5 amp fuse in the air conditioning unit that when replaced restored power and allowed the battery powered thermostat to control the heater and a/c.

Comment on the Hunter thermostat I used in my RV: The electrical pins on the back plate pull out of their solder joints very easy. I've re-soldered 3 already and have decided to get a different thermostat. I'm getting a thermostat that has the batteries in the front under a panel and doesn't require removal of the head unit to access/replace the batteries.

If you upgrade to a digital home style battery powered thermostat, keep the manual one as a backup. If not, make sure you are comfortable knowing what wires power what so you can hotwire wires for heat or cooling in an emergency situation so you don't ruin a camping trip.
