OH NO...deadbolt key broke!!

ok, perhaps I should have paid more attention to the DW when she said last night that I need to show her how to operate the lock on the door. We have had this camper about a month, new from dealer, and been working on setting it up.

Well, I go out today and was going to insert key in lock when I noticed the key looked funny. The cut part above one of the grooves had been squished down over the groove. When pulled up on it with my thumbnail, it broke. To make matters worst, this is the only key. For some reason I only one and I didn't realize it, so it was on my list to call dealer on (he is 2 hrs away).

I have called the dealer and they are looking for a key. They said I need to get the lock apart (really, I'm on the wrong side of the door for that) to get the key code. There is a code on the key and I went to RVlocks on web and they have precut keys to that code. This maybe my only solution but will take awhile.

Other thoughts? Drill out lock and replace whole unit as there are dealers closer but not Rockwood??

Order a key and have it sent overnite or 2 day. Cost may be about the same as taking it to a dealer or calling a locksmith.

I had something similar happen to me on my new Sabre, the lock actually went bad and I broke both keys trying to get it open. My work laptop was inside and I really needed to get it out, thus the 2 broken keys. Of course, this was on a Sunday afternoon, so first thing Monday morning, I called my dealer. Ended up having a locksmith come and drill the lock at a cost of $90 then had to put in a new handle/lock assembly. I was lucky as all was covered under warranty, they paid the locksmith bill and sent out the new handle/lock and I installed it. They are not hard to install once you can get the door open

I did look for another way into the coach and I was not able to find any way in, all the windows were locked and no entrance from the basement.

if you had a hybrid TT, you could go through the bunk end to access from inside. why do i know, cause i had a similar thing happen to me.
i was able to remove the lock/latch from inside.

but unless you can get in from a window, i think a locksmith is your only option.

I had the same thing happen a couple years ago. I drilled it out and ended up replacing the entire thing.

You can drill out the key way. Most likely a 3/8 bit. Once the key way is removed you should be able to turn the deadbolt with a screwdriver. The lock will have to be replaced but will have less damage then breaking a window.

Does the pass thru storage in the front also access under-bed storage? Mine does. Just push the bed up. (Need a small friend.)

Saga Update

Just an update....received keys with correct code from RVlocksandmore.com None of the keys would fully insert into lock, leading me to conclude there is some internal damage to lock. So much for Plan A.

Plan B: I opened the small storage access hatch onslide out that is behind couch and directly below the designated emergency escape window. I was able to open the window and pop out the screen. I went in thru the window. The deadbolt lock would not moved. I took the back plate off and even it large pliers for leverage could not get deadbolt to move. Could not access 2 of 4 screws to further dissassemble lockset.

Plan C: I drilled out the lock cylinder and was able to release deadbolt. I ordered a complete handle and lockset assembly from Fastec and was able to get it keyed to my existing new keys. Ordered yesterday.
