Portable Generator to run 13,500 Btu A/C unit on 2008 Georgetown 350

trying to find a portable generator/inverter that will be able to run one rooftop A/C. currently have a Guardian Generac QP65 (6500 watts) 120V/240V single phase 60 hertz. found few generators that have a 30 amp output but is only 120V. my ONE & ONLY question is do i need a 120V/240V generator to be able to run a 13,500 Btu rooftop A/C or is a 120V generator with a 30 amp output sufficient? for example will a "Champion Power Equipment 75531i" be good enough to run one A/C unit? i only need the generator on when i'm driving in the hot summer heat and one A/C will be sufficient. MH does not have an auto transfer switch.

Back story:
current generator has about 3000 hours on it and is backfiring like crazy (idle & under load). i've done the following and the problem still exist:

- changed both plugs (it'll run nicely for a few hours then problem starts again)
- changed air filter (nothing)
- changed fuel filter (nothing)
- cleaned combustion chamber with Mopar and water (it'll run nicely for a few hours then problem starts again)
- changed carburetor (new - ran nicely for a few hours then problem starts again)
- upgraded to 92 octane
- added Stabil, Seafoam, etc. (nothing)
- unplugged breather hose from intake (nothing)
- compression test (both cylinder good at approx. 122 psi)

one thing worth mentioning is when i pulled both plugs one of them seems to be really dirty. once i clean the heads or install new plugs it seems to run fine until the plugs get dirty again. there's something causing a bad combustion in that one chamber and i can't figure it out. I am out of ideas. the only thing left that i can think of is a faulty stator (not easy to get to).

If it has a 30A outlet on it, it will run a 13,500 unit, obviously provided its big enough to power it. You may need to put a hard start capacitor on your AC just to not overload your Genny during startup though.

A running 13,500 unit draws around 12-1300 Watts while running.....as stated, startup is where it draws more, but that Genny should still do a fine job.

Thanks, i heard about that but haven't done much research on it. i take it just find the same spec capacitor with hard start? to save me some time, do you have something you can refer?

Every AC appliance in the coach should be 120VAC. You can run one AC on a 30A source, but you will need to be careful not to run other high draw items ( ie microwave) at the same time.

Honestly I don't have the info...I've briefly looked into adding it, but don't do any dry camping so dropped that quest for information. I'm sure somebody around here who's done it can chime in. From what I've read on here it's pretty simple to do.

If your looking to invest in new Gen go here Boliy Generator and make the comparisons of Champion and Boliy. I have the Boliy and runs my 15000btu ac. just fine. Later RJD

Suppco Spp6E or SPP6 depending on who you talk to. I have used both and they both work. Spp6 is what rep at Supco told me to use. The guys "in the field" who frequent this forum say to use the SPP6E.

very interested but not a lot of new information on these. reviews are of older models (2012 and older). wondering if it has gotten better.

My Boliy ran my airconditioning just fine for the past 4 1/2 years until last month. My stepper motor that controls the motor is too slow to adjust to increased low causing engine to die. $12.99 plus shipping and 20 minutes of labor and I'm back in business. I can't complain since that has been the only problem with my Boliy over the years.

On your generac check your Ignition system . They are heat sensitive and can work cold and arc out when hot. Dead spark will cause fuel to ignite late outside the cylinder. Coils use to go when hot. The new solid state can have the same issues. Check the resistance of your ignition system when cold and hot.

To answer your question crazyasian, I own a Champion 3100w unit with 120v\30A plug-in and it powers-up and runs my 15k BTU A\C just fine. It's great generator but you'll have to refuel every 5.5-6 hrs if running your A\C constantly.

I have two Champion 3500/4000 units and either will run my 15K BTU AC without any problem. The one that I keep with the unit at the storage yard is run every time I go there to clean up or do mods. It has over 1,100 hours on it and never missed a beat [$295 at Tractors Supply]. I have yet to find a need for an inverter generator.

They are safer for sensitive electronic equipment to be plugged into. It's easy to fry your cellphone, laptop, or iPad charging them with an open frame, non-inverter generator. Not to mention I wouldn't want to be next to you at a CG or race track while you're running your two open frame Champion units, unless I had earplugs.

I will also give a thumbs up to the Champion 3100I. We have 13.5K dometic A/C and our 3100I has no issue running it, along with the 2 fridges on electric.

Honda and Yamaha inverter generators are the top of the line. Start there and if you can't afford those then look at the knock offs like champions and boliy.

I wouldn't call Champion a "knock-off." It's not a clone of Honda or Yamaha, it's a completely independently engineered similar product that happens to cost a third less than H or Y.

Now Boliy looks like a rebadged Yamaha to me, but...

I had the Champion 3000/3500 It would not run a 13.5 AC, when the AC cycled the Gen would shut down due to overload. I got rid of it and got a Honda 3000 Handi, it will run the same 13.5 AC only if I leave the ECO mode off. With the ECO mode on when AC cyales it will trip out also. The Honda 3000 Handi will only run 4 hours with the ECO mode off.

X2. I also have a 2k Energizer CONVERTER generator. That cost twice what the champion did, but need the converter. My 5ver has an inverter, don't need the cost of inverter genny.
