Question for the plumbers

I'm replacing my garden tub. The old one had plumber's putty around the drain installed from the factory. The new tub and drain came with a piece of round foam material for the drain. The tub that plumber's putty comes in states not to use it on plastic and the guy in the plumbing department at Lowe's told me to use 100% silicone, not putty. Can someone tell if I'm safe just using the foam that came with it or should I use silicone or putty?
Thamks.

Found out that plumber's putty is petroleum based and will break down plastic. I guess I'll go with silicone.
