Removing Factory Install Light Fixture caulk?

I am replacing the fauly due to moisture intrusion factory installed "Hitch Light" on my TT. I will remove the original light that had an external on/off switch and replace it with the same light fixture but without the switch.. I will place the on/off switch in the pass thru compartment out of the weather. After carefully cutting the caulk to remove the light fixture itself, how can I safely remove the factory installed white caulk around the light that remains stuck to the trailer body without damaging the metal skin of the trailer? After I install the new light, I plan to seal it to the trailer using Boss 378 RV Silicone Sealant.
