Arrow Royal Purple or Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Oil ?

So kids...which do I go with and why? Locally, Mobil 1 75/90 is $8.99 a quart and Royal Purple 75/90 is $15.99 a quart. I just bought a Mag-Hytec diff cover and need to fill 'er up (about 4 quarts).

If not these two brands, what brand of full synthetic gear oil should I get?

Your thoughts and experiences please.

I used Mobil1 on my truck because I read good things about it. IMO, either one will serve your truck well. The best thing about Mobil1 products is that they are available pretty much anywhere.

I used Amsoil "Severe Gear" 75/90 in mine. I used it before in my 04.5 and again in my 06 that i traded up to and had good results. Just getting rid of the old stuff from the factory is a step up in the first place. Amsoil also carries a 75/110 and a 75/140 if you have the need for something with more protection for heat and wear. If you have any chance of dipping your pumpkins under water, it's always a good idea to drain and refill anyway. Water will kill the benefits of any product if it's allowed to mix and seperate with the fluid you choose.

Check out this study that was posted on the Amsoil site - http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g2457.pdf - it's a comparison of several different brands of gear oils. There are some that excel past Amsoil and some not so much. One of the items that were important to me was the cold tests since it does dip down below zero a few times a year and I work 50 miles away from my home. It's a happy medium with good coverage for all seasons and is price is comparitive to other brands. With my preferred customer card, i get it less then what's stated on the sites and if you know of a dealer (online or not) you can get "sponsored" to get your own card. I was lucky enough to get under one of the guys on the cummins forum i belong to.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents. Good luck in your research.

That study, albeit sponsored by Amsoil, provided a lot of good information...thanks !! After reading it, I don't think I'm going with Royal Purple unless I hear from more of you experts telling me why I should.

Thanks Again !

I know it is not syn ... But Lucas makes a heavy duty gear oil. Lucas has always done a good job for me. I have used the injector cleaner and tranny additive for years.

I run Amsoil in my Chevy's crankcase. Saves me some $$ since I only change the oil and filter once a year. I have been running it for 4 years and 90k later the oil looks as good as new. I am running an Amsoil air filter as well. I have noticed the Amsoil has quieted my engine down also. New model Chevy's have a little knocking sound (especially when they are cold) when they idle.

Only complaint I have with Amsoil is I have to contact my dealer to have him order what I need. I believe Royal Purple is available at Oreilly's Auto.

Heyya.
You should see about getting your own "preferred customer" card. I think it's $20 bucks a year and you will save that much in the lower prices then what the site or what a dealer charges you. That is, unless they're giving you the preferred customer prices...then you win both ways.

I know what you're saying tho, planning ahead is a bit of work and if you're short a quart, then what? First thing i did was took my vin number in to the local dealer and asked them to print out the specs on the pickup. Now I have everything I need for capacities and all the vin specific info. I think all the caps are also in the owners manual for those that have it.

Amsoil

You can get it just about anywhere. I've seen it at NAPA, Walmart, Fleet Farm, . . . .

I think you'll be happy with it. The best move was to change out the factory stuff anyway, i know that they say that you don't have to change it for the first 100k miles, but who are we kidding. When i pulled my pumpkin lids off to drain, I cleaned the lid until i could eat off of it...there was plenty of slime on it. I also took some pictures of the gears while i had it open for reference should I ever need it for whatever reason. If you're curious, you can see them here http://picasaweb.google.com/rthrbels...eat=directlink

Check out the before and after pics of the lid....eiikk
