Anyone have a rv gps, like the ones at camping world? They are supposed to have rv friendly roads and stops in them. Just wondering if they are worth the money?

Personally I don't think there is a RV GPS unit out there that is worth the money. My Opinion of course.

I have a built-in GPS in my truck, but we did buy a Garmin RV 760 LMT. Haven't used it for RV'ing (got it at the beginning of winter), but for fooling around with it in the car- it's been nice.

I have the Good Sam version 7". So far it's been accurate, no complaints for that
the down side is you have to be synched with wifi to get the fuel stop information
caught in on sale $299.00

one more thing....you have to buy one of those adhesive disk to stick on the surface you mount it on, unless that surface is smooth......only thing they don't put in the box

I just purchased the RVND 7725, downloaded a manual online to read before it arrives in the mail.
I have an f350 and plan to mount it on a ram computer mount so it probably will not have good line of site through the window to the satellites

I want to add an external antenna to the external port but the rand website does not sell any and the manufacturers book gives no information on the style and or size of the plug.

Can anyone help with a plug size and place I can but an external antenna for the rear port?

Like others, we have a built in GPS unit in our Truck. For General RV use, however, I can wholeheartedly recommend ALLSTAYS iPhone/iPad Camp & RV App. Excellent database - better than any GPS I have seen and it is updated regularly!

In fact, there are a BUNCH of RV-related apps for the iPad (IMHO, a iPad should be one of the first Tech purchases made by any RV'er

I have the RV 760. I do get a little frustrated with the search mode. It never shows the same thing Mapquest and some other search sites show for rv parks, resteraunts and other stuff.

I would stay away from the RM 7710. Its better after the firmware update but still not a great GPS.

just reading on this thread....I normally buy garmin products because I spend all my time outdoors....I broke down and bought the Rand Mcnally with some of their other products....Worst decision I ever made, havent really cared much for the atlas app or any of their other apps and products...their support hasnt been all that great either.....The GPS has the worst search of any we have used...as for their route selection, if you keep it on the main roads and interstate, isnt so bad.....but on numerous routes it has tried driving us thru parks, vacant lots and showed that parking areas didn't exist when there was and POIs will not show up........I personally will go back to all Garmin...

We also have the Good Sam (Rand McNally) 7" from CW. My only complaint is in the daylight the screen is VERY difficult to see. Even with one of those add-on hoods, the color contrast on the screen makes it very difficult to use in daylight.

I guess I have to ask, being a simple guy, why would you want more than the GPS that comes in any smart phone? I use mine not only for navigation, but also to consult several web sites for campground reviews and to make reservations. Once I got a smart phone, I ditched the GPS attachment and mapping software I used to use with my laptop. As Bob says, you can get good apps. Updates are an issue no matter what you use. Google Maps does a better job of updating than most - but it's not perfect.

We took advantage of AT&T's free upgrade (costs the same as the 10GB we were on) to 40GB data plan for a family of 4. So data is never a worry.

If I need a bigger screen, I have a 8" LG Android tablet that costs $10/month for 24 months when purchased with my G3.

We really like our Garmin Nuvi 52-LM which came with free lifetime map upgrades. I've compared it to my on-board GPS on the Tundra and it's far superior.

When in a strange area, the "Near Me" and "Good Sam" iPhone apps are most useful. (Some smart folks will, soon, figure out how to send the address from the phone right to the GPS.)

Because a dedicated GPS unit does not rely on cell signal

We use our iPhones as well when we are on the road, but the Garmin RV has a LOT of RV-specific data (like switchbacks & low bridges) that maps apps on cell phones do not have.

Oh yeah,... the 8" screen on the GPS is a tad easier to read than the iPhone's screen when you are zipping down the road at 60 MPH

The GPS that is made for the RV is very helpful for bridge height not to mention if there are restrictions on LP through tunnels. I have the RM one. I have had good luck after finding out how to set up my preferences correctly. Before that we took the long way around.
