Securing and protecting a generator

Our new toy hauler has a spot on the tongue for a generator. I have a Honda 3000is Handi that I am thinking of mounting there. For those who have a generator on the tongue, how do you secure it (both for traveling, and against theft)? Also, i can get a protective cover for the generator, but the generator shelf is expanded metal, so road dirt, etc. could still get on the generator from below. Besides getting a piece of sheet metal and covering the expanded metal, are there any other solutions?

Thanks!

I would take some kind of bolts and bolt it on there. Then I would take a welder and weld the bolts so the nuts can't come off. The only way to get it off then would to grind the bolts. I maybe put between 4-6 bolts to hold it on and maybe weld 2 - or all if you don't feel safe.

Outa sight---outa mind !!

Captain RON, put that sucker in the bed of the truck out sight. Your type of generator is a high theft item. These days It would get probably just enough $$$$ for a crack head to stay high for a couple of days.

You mount it on the tongue, vibration through the TOY HAULER. You are a trusting soul.

If they can get that off to steal it then they deserve to have it! It would be easier to try and steal the whole camper!

You can but 3/4 inch rubber pads between 2 fender washers and it will take away a lot of the vibration, there really isn't that much on a Honda any way.

Thanks! We carry it in the bed of the truck right now, so that is still an option. I can set it on the platform on the tongue when we need it. I hadn't thought about the vibration, so if I do anything I'll add rubber for insulation.

How about the battery (ies)? Do folks secure them against theft?

Hmmmmmmmm. Somehow I never stopped to consider that. And I have a nice $100+ Trojan just sitting out there ripe for stealing . . .

You would almost have to use a cable and padlock. Then getting the length just right might be a trick . . .

just a comment on the 3000 Handi.
you do know it is way louder than the other Honda inverter generators, right?

that's one reason it isn't selling that well. i would never spend that amount of money if it wasn't on the same level of quiet, as Honda's other generators.
but if you're boondocking, then it'll work great.

Thanks for your concern. We've been using it for two years and haven't received a complaint yet. The weight savings of the 3000is was a big benefit with out old trailer, which was getting close to the weight rating.

Captain Ron, I found and purchased these neat little gizmos for securing my tongue-mounted batteries...seems pretty secure...

B & D RV Battery Lock For RV travel trailers and popup campers.

Mounting your gennie

Yea .. the tonge mount sounds a little questionalbe.
how about mounting your genset on a good piece of 3/4 inch ply ... leaving enough room for you to be able to roll the wheels of your trailer over the other half of the plywood. This way they would either have to move your trailer to steal it, or smash the heck out of the plywood, and most likely the generator.
Cover it up with a small tarp when not in use, and put a couple of pieces of firewood on the ends ... they may just walk by it thinking its just firewood.
