What wire did you use on the second part of that breaker? If you only had the black wire attached to one of the two breakers and the neutral, white wire, connected to the neutral bar and the ground connected to the ground bar you would only have 120 volts. You wouldn't fry anything but you still should switch that breaker to a single pole. The resistance of the two breaker will be more than the single and might not trip as early if a problem arose. Also use another single pole breaker and list as spare or a cover plate to cover the hole left after you remove the double pole breaker.
