step finish chipping/rusting off

we have a 2016 Catalina. we picked it up in March and the finish on the steps is starting to peal off around the holes in the steps and some areas rusting under the paint. Any idea on best way to fix besides cleaning up and spray paint. Dealer maintenance advisor says that is normal and not covered under warranty.

I can clean, treat the rust and paint probably better than they can so if that is my option i guess i have work to do.

What can be done to protect them?

Well... had it in for other warranty work zo asked about the steps. Best manufacturer would do is clean and paint them. Oh well.

Looks like the steps were not properly prepped before they were painted. They need to be sandblasted so there is no rust, primed n then painted.

I certainly agree with this recommendation. If, however, your looking for a simpler solution, I hardily recommend to following.
1) Pick up a spray can of Rustolium "Rust Reformer" at your big box store.
2)Remove as much of the peeling paint as you can.
3) Do not remove or sand the rust, simply spray the Rust Reformer OVER the rust, let dry and spray with topcoat paint.

PS- Feathering the edges where the paint has pealed off before final topcoat will give you a much nicer looking job.

When we brought our TT home, I sprayed rustoleum on our steps, and tongue and so far so good. Our shasta started rusted after our first trip, I figured I'd tried to prevent it on this one.

We will see how the shop job goes. I tried to have them replaced but they wouldnt go for it. I may try and contact yhe manufacturer. If not i will fix up my self properly.

I put wrap around rugs on my steps so we can wipe our feet off when going inside.

Not sure what the metal steps look like underneath.....and I don't really care anymore. The rug offers better grip than wet metal steps too.
