Tire rubbing upper inner fender

My friend stopped by asking for help his left rear tire had rubbed a hole in the covering of the upper inner fender. I measured the clearance there was less then 1/2 inch and the front tire had almost 2.25 inches. So I looked for a broken spring (none) then measured the clearance from the axle to the frame it was the same on both sides. When I removed the tire to get a closer look at the inner fender I got a surprise the tire I took off was about 2 inches larger in diameter then the others, but it was the same size according to the side wall markings. I think something let go inside the tire, hoping tire guy might shed some light on this. The tire on the left is the spare the right the one that was rubbing. I put his spare on and all is good to go.

The inner tread has separated and will blow very soon if put back in use. Ask me how I know. When the tire is unmounted it will likely be oval instead of round. Finding it like this probably saved lots of $$$ in damage from a blow out. Good catch. I'd check the others to see if they are rounded out on the treads like this one, and replace them if they are.

Hard to tell... the one on the left looks like a castle rock...the one on the right looks to have been replaced. IMO

As stated broken belt.

My friend is having the tire replaced today. I put his spare on the trailer for the drive to the tire shop. I'm so glad we found this before it blew out. We are leaving today for a group campout. Yes he does have different brands of tires on his rig.

Back from camping with a followup. When my friend got to the tire store they found the right front in the same shape. I did not think to check the date code the tire shop said they were mfg in 2010 nine years is sort of stretching it. He replaced all four.
