Water Pump

While reading another post, I inferred that the water pump will work when connected to city water.

With the water pump switch on, mine does not run when connected to city water. I assumed it would only work using the water tank.

How could you tell? The water pump only runs until the water lines are pressurized; with city water connected the water lines are always pressurized.

If you go into the motorhome forum then go to Georgetown you’ll find a post giving a procedure to reseat the check valve. It worked for me. Search fresh tank filling. Hope it works for you.

Mine wouldn’t shut off. So something to do with the check valve I think. Hopefully it’s all straightened out now. Find out next trip. My fresh tank did stop filling though

It runs all the time when ON city water? Or just on the internal water tank?

There is a switch that is closed (run) when the water pressure is below the cut off pressure and open (stop) when the pressure is above the cut off pressure.

Run all the time when on city water pressure can be a bad switch.

Run all the time when on internal tank could be:

Water available at faucet: bad cutoff switch.

Water NOT available at faucet: air leak in input line somewhere.

Run when on fresh tank but that stopped too. No faucets open. Maybe debris in the check valve? Not really sure what caused it.

You need demand to start the suction to self prime the pump. It won't suck water if the pump is pushing against a closed system.

Open a faucet and see if the sound changes as it pulls water out of the tank.

There is no reason to run the water pump when you are using city water. The city water will fulfill all your water needs. Running the water pump while using city water will let the city water to flow back through the water pump and cause the check valve to not seat properly and your fresh water tank will overflow.

I didn’t. The water pump was off when on city water. Fresh tank filled anyway. Turned city water off to use water in the fresh tank and the pump would keep running but not every time. Maybe every third or fourth time.

I agree.

The only few times I used my onboard pump when connected to city water was when the city water pressure was so low there was barely any pressure. (Once at a rally type event where 50 campers were hooked to one hydrant and once where the campground's well pump was going bad)

We only run the pump to take a shower.
We then topped off the fresh tank, unhooked the city water and used just the pump.

Should be no reason to run the pump on city water.

Well, mostly true as a rule; but... (advanced technique only!)

In a case like camping on temporary water lines at a fairgrounds or race track (usually a 5/8 inch hose feeding 12 to 16 campers on manifolds), water pressure can drop rapidly if folks are showering and/or using flush water at the same time.

I find, in this case, that filling the fresh tank and turning on the pump is advantageous. Since, normally, city water pressure is higher than the pump cut in pressure; the water pump will not run.

If the city water pressure should drop below the cut in pressure, the water pump will turn on and prevent your shower from coming to a stop with soap in your eyes.

Just before you break camp, turn off the city water and open a tap so the pump runs. Then shut it off and drain the fresh tank to a level safe to travel on before you leave for the dump station.
