What have they done?

At the RV Shows we noticed that Several F/R Divisions are now using (Rough Texture Material) on the (Ends of the Slides)! The texture is similar to the (Rough inside surface of the Storage doors) that is (Hard/Difficult/Impossible) to Clean! My present slides have the SAME Smooth surface as the entire unit,Easy to keep Clean! Who in the Hell came up with this Brainstorm Idea and WHY?? The slide end material is NOT even the same (Color) as the rest of the unit either! Youroo!!

From my understanding the rough texture is made to pull against the seals when opening/closing the slide to create a tighter seal versus a smooth side that may not create as tight of a seal. I am no engineer though, but it sounds like an interesting concept.

This engineer says nope!

Slide seals, just about always, are bulb/wiper combination. Wiper won't seal better to the pebble texture. What the pebble texture will do is minimize the wiper adhering, like they tend to do on smooth sides, resulting in tears of those PITA to replace seals. I'd rather take care of my seals with proper cleaning and protectorant application and have matching sidewall material!

Silicone on seals keep them supple and in good working order for years, and I spray it on a sock less messy and put some on the inside seals also.

There was another poster that posted about the slide bottom tearing. Sent it in for repairs but it was just as bad when he picked it up. Been in the shop 4 of the 8 months they have owned it.

Putting a pebble surface on the sides is as dumb and the material they used on the bottom.

I didn't see any of that at the show in Greensboro NC this weekend. We are going to the one in Raleigh next weekend so I will have to keep an eye out for that.

When I was looking for our new trailer. I noticed this slide sidewall material. It reminds me of the pebbled bathroom plastic like paneling.
I asked the salesman about this and he indicated that a lot of the "entry level" models had this type of material. He said it was strictly a cost savings measure. We have noticed it on several of the Forest River models at recent shows. The color was a close match on some. Saw a toy hauler (XLR) I think had grey sidewalls with black and red trim, the slide out walls were this pebbled material in black.

Our new Rockwood still has the matching slide sidewalls as the rest of the trailer.

I think this is just another cost saver that really is going to be a problem for owners.
