390BH-60 Fifth gear issue

When I am taking off from a stop or accelerating from 30mph, I have an issue when the coach shifts from 4th to 5th. Once it shifts to fifth, the turbo boost drops to 5-8lbs and the Berk stops accelerating. No matter how much as I press the pedal, it barely maintains speed in the 55mph range on flat ground. Once I go downhill and get to 60mph it shifts to 6th gear and the boost kicks back in. I can manually put it in 4th and get to 60 and then put it back in auto and it does better.

Does anyone have this issue? Have you noticed anything similar?

I personally have not had that issue ever with my 2014 390BH (340).

Ok.

I am just checking before I take it to Freightliner.

Thanks!

No Fault codes and I replaced the fuel filters 2k miles ago. It has been doing this since I bought it. It pulls like a freight train until it hits 5th and then you almost experience weightlessness as the acceleration stops.

I have been telling myself it is some kind of transmission program to protect 5th gear, but we went to the Orange Bowl in Miami and it was very annoying.

It almost sounds like your computer needs to be re-flashed or programmed. If it's working fine in all the gears except 5, then I would think the computer is cutting your turbo back in 5th gear for some
Reason.

I tend to agree with you.

I just wanted to see if anyone else had this issue before I take it to Freightliner. It's only 30-45 minutes from me, but it is a hassle to take it in.

If you pull the dipstick for the transmission and sniff the oil does it smell like it is burnt?

It sounds to me like turbo-under boost sensor is faulty

I have not smelled the fluid. I'll go the storage and check it.

Looks like I need to take it to Freightliner.

Thanks for the replies.

390BH-60 Fifth gear issue

I would call the FL hotline, see if they can recommend anything, then take it to an Allison shop and have them check the CPU on the transmission.

I didn't have this problem but I had a communication issue with mine. It was covered under warranty.

I had the identical problem in mine. All boost would drop in my 4 to 5 shift. Freightliner was able to diagnose it in about 10 minutes back to a simple programming error. Call freight liner corporate for assistance because my local service center was confused until they got direction from FL. Once FL was involved, my coach was ready in minutes. Glenn Collins at FL was the one who helped me. 800-385-4357. Hope this helps. Call me if you need my info so Glenn can pull up my case for reference. I'm at 3102613443. -brian

Brian: Thanks for your help. It was a simple programming error. "Powertrain Protection" was enabled and should be disabled on motorhomes. Once that was corrected, it drives like a champ. Boost in 5th gear is back!
